A 150 mile mostly motorway journey on my near 2000 mile 2016 car left me with a variety of observations. I will first say I was wearing an open face motorcycle helmet and earplugs.
Around 55 mph there is a transmission whine which occurs in little over a few miles from start although not obtrusive. Not dissimilar to that of a car with slightly worn transmission. After just 10 miles of motorway speeds, at between 76 and 81mph indicated there was a different pronounced bevel box wail which remained at any steady speed between those figures - not as loud as when first running in car though. I can be precise because traffic was continually taking me through that speed band. At 82mph the noise dissappeared with a very noticeable transition. Over the length of the journey the wail did vary getting a little less, possibly as bevel box temperature dropped.
Thank heavens the speedo over reads though

Has anyone tried a 10% addition of STP oil treatment to the bevel box?

The racers edge! Ever read Andy Granitellie's book? Studebaker Treated Petroleum Original formula STP is rich in ZDDP (Zinc) which is good for solid lifter motors, and may have a benefit in your BB. I see that STP also makes a gearbox additive.

You've certainly made the most of this Summer by now. How are the bevel box noises ? is there still a difference? How many miles did you drive since then?

I was away for a week and missed it. it's more like mid-autumn here today
I've only done about 400 miles or so and the bevel box is quieter but not quiet.
It's still noisiest around 55-65 but more a soft spoken voice than a shriek - if that makes sense?
However, the drive belt was also tightened at the service so that could also be having an effect so overall nothing conclusive.
It would be interesting if others try a switch to EP140 as well to see if there is a trend.

We're just back from a 600 mile drive around the Italian lakes and the first thing my wife said to me when we stopped at home was: "This f*cking bevelbox makes me crazy"
So she was clear enough I think. ( Dear Mr Evens when we get a solution ? )
Due to the fact the bevelbox in her car is still leaking slightly I will change the oil from Red Line shock proof to Millers 140 (if I can get it in Switzerland) Hope that the leaking will stop and that the noise will be much less (for the last it will be wishful thinking I'm afraid)
For the rest we had a nice and problem-free trip. Some days hot (32 degree) and this afternoon pouring rain and 5 degree on the Grimsel pass.
