Neil, I'm sorry to hear about your son and well done for sharing it as I'm sure naturally it's hard to do so. I'd be surprised if there is a family that doesn't have a connection to somebody close who suffers with mental health and there's a number I can think of in ours. Often I've thought that because it's not like a physical injury/disability you can see people and the NHS just don't understand it sufficiently.

I hope you make some progress.

Very sorry to hear about your son Neil. My experiences are limited to watching 18 months of post natal depression which included visits to hospital. That was a truly horrible thing to go through but with hope of resolution.

In truth our experiences of the NHS were worse when MrsW developed asthma and it took them far too long to diagnose a common condition. At one stage it was touch & go and that was as bad as the PND to witness.

I hope the medics sort your son out soon Neil.

Neil, Understand your feelings, it is no better in Australia. My 32 year old daughter suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder and that is not only hard on her but extremely difficult on those that love her.

I have also found that speaking to other people is not only therapeutic but also helps everyone realise that mental health issues are as real and as debilitating as physical injuries and as such should be given the same amount of attention and funding.

Digimap,
I fully agree with you -- my daughter is 35 and also suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder - In Ireland mental health funding has been cut drastically during the recent recession and it is now down to 6% of health spend. My daughter has been in a Psychiatric unit for the past 4 months(thankfully being discharged this week) and the place would cause mental illness rather than be a place where you would expect healing.
My Daughter has had a long (very long) history of in and out of various hospitals, but the one place which really helped was a treatment community in Richmond, London. UK- I don't really know what their methods are, but in the year that she was there, she became independent and has lived mostly independently since. They actually gave her her life back - wonderful place but horrendously expensive, covered in part by the Irish health service, thankfully!

The hardest thing from my perspective was realising that as her father I can't fix it - and I still don't really understand how someone who is hugely talented and is a qualified first responder and ambulance driver can then do such harm to herself and while she can, and does, care for others, she finds it so difficult to care for herself, but that is my failing!

I hope that your daughter finds some peace and comfort

Cheers!

I'm not a great fan of car/helmet mounted drive videos, but I enjoyed that, very nicely put together and created a great atmosphere. Well done Robert.

Neil, well done for being so open, it's ludicrous that there should be such stigma attached to mental health problems considering that it's such a widespread issue in one form or another. If a physical issue were as big it would get much more funding. It annoys me that we've just been hearing about potentially public funded drug treatment to prevent HIV, yet we cannot afford to treat so many existing diseases.
I am fortunate enough to never had any first hand experience of mental health problems and I can only imagine the frustration of effected family.
Keep your chin up.
