Hi All, Firstly hi to everyone, I’m a newbie here and to Morgan ownership. Just bought a 1996 +8 been a joy to own and learning to spanner as I go! First issue though. A week back my cooling fan came on full time (even when ignition off), which given the heat in Budapest was not a big problem. Issue today though was it stopped working altogether in traffic!! Luckily I didn’t cook it and got it home safe thankfully.  So are there are any places I should be checking first before i head to a mechanic? Power to fan is clean and clear… Thanks for your help! Alex

Check the fan switch. They are thermostatic and start the fan when they detect a high coolant temperature. They can be replaced with ones of different temperature settings. Mine is in the top tank of the rad. You could replace it with the type that is adjustable. You insert a sensor in your top hose and move a dial/switch to your desired fan start temperature.

Thanks Sospan will check there. what's odd is that it was permanently on, then now permanently off. Yet while trying to limp it home it came back on for a minute or two... felt like a connection or earth to me but...

Check the spades on the fan motor, iv had mine drop off .
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Hi Alex,
Good to see you on here after meeting at New Elms a couple of months ago.
Check whether the thermo switch is on the earth side of your fan (very likely). If shorting it starts the fan motor you know where the fault lies - either the switch or the earth side of the switch.

Hi Graham, great to hear from you and thanks for getting back - nice to already know someone on here! Had a great trip down in terrible weather to Budapest after I bought. Been great fun ever since. Will check tomorrow and see. Fiddled with it tonight and the fan is intermittent, sometimes permanently on with no ignition, sometimes off.

It will run on after the ignition is off if the temperature is high. At least it does on my 1999 +8.

And on my 4/4 Bob, quite normal. Alex, from the sounds of it you have an intermittent connection in that circuit. Think British (or classic Italian) bike electricals - should help!!

On a 1996 car won't the otter switch be at the bottom of the rad not the top?
