The difference between Stage 1 MMC and stock pipes is pretty dramatic. Stage 1 is loud, especially on acceleration in the lower gears.

The best part of them is the lower end smoothness. Not sure if that is a function of the air cleaner Venturi treatment or the exhaust.

I would hazard that it is more air in

I thought so too, but the air cleaner is larger in the oem filter, much larger, the venturi stinger is the main difference but it has a smaller air cleaner surface.

More to do with the stock exhausts being bloody awful. Huge back pressure from the restrictive baffles leading to poor scavenging of exhaust gasses so a hot nasty mixture in the cylinders. Although the engine runs hot on the standard set up as though it was running lean, it actually seems to run rich as the ECU tries to bring the temperature down. The standard map works well with the Stage one pipes and air filter but it's the pipes that are the biggest benefit. The stage one filter may be smaller than stock but it isn't tightly shrouded so probably allows a fair bit more air in. 10 minutes with a set of tin snips on the filter cover might achieve the same result.

Good point Calum! The Garage 56 air cleaner cover is more open but appears to just be a modified OEM cover.

I did notice an improvement with the G56 cover

Is the filter and the throat of the venturi the same as OEM?
