Facom, Beta, Halfords Professional and Wera are all good, but I am a particular fan of Teng tools.

Snap On are great for professional day-in/day-out usage, but far too expensive IMO for hobbyist use.

Clock, we must be of the same age.

I bought my socket set 40 years ago too and I also have a big birthday on the horizon. I'm thinking a good present idea is a flight in a Tiger Moth ... stuff the socket set, it's knackered but still works!

I have a very motley collection of tools that have been collected and abused over many years. Sockets and spanners often modified or ground away to do something different than originally intended. I buy mine second hand from markets and boot sales, you can pick up some real bargains. They are only tools after all!

You are right Roger, I also picked up some really good tools of great quality at auto jumbles usually a couple of quid.

The stark reality is that hoping to enjoy a full forty years' use out of a new socket set would be supremely optimistic.

My dear father is still going strong at 86, I'm pleased to say, so that gives me some cause for hope; but at that age he tells me he doesn't even buy unripe bananas.

I have a set of 3 socket sets with different size drives that I have owned for at least 30 years. They cover most sizes of hex heads that I need. I don't even know what brand they are but they are obviously good quality and I doubt I will ever need to buy another set.
