This topic will have been raised before, maybe even by me. But I was wondering what sort of annual mileage you average in your Morgan, having just worked out what I have done in my toys. The Lotus worked out at just under 2000 miles pa over 7 years and the bikes at 2500 over 20 years.

In neither case did I / do I feel constrained to keep the mileage down. Bike mileage is limited because it tends to be used only for single person / no luggage travel in congested areas. The Lotus because it was never any fun on motorways or in heavy traffic being designed for fast cornering on open roads. And how often do you get chance to drive just on nice empty windey B roads - well I guess the answer is 2000 miles a year for me.

No doubt the current toy will do even fewer miles - whilst market prices have been in a bubble over the last few years, depreciation due to mileage alone is still about £1 per mile. But a pal has been staying with us for a couple of days, a fellow owner and a very wealthy man who can be far more relaxed about resale price than me. But his 512 has still only averaged 1500 miles a year.

All this begs the question of why own something you barely use. So what annual mileage do you average, and if this is low, why do you bother owning the car?

I do some 300miles on my bicycle. No idea regarding depreciation.

The Mogs are used whenever I feel it is fun to do so. I do not buy fun toys on credit so the money has been spent. Why bother not to use them?

in 7 years in my last Mog I did 25,000 miles & sold it for £500 more than I paid for it.

In the Roadster in 2 1/2 years I have done 10k.

My tin top does about 3k i.e. winter car.

Just coming up to owning the car for 5 years. Averaging 4000 miles pa.
Up until now all one day trips usually in fine weather.
Mileage limited by time and family commitments.

Around 2,500 miles per year average in the Morgan although it'll be more this year, similar on my 1200 GS at the moment. 10,000 in my first year with the Porsche and around 6k in the Alfa.

PS. About 10 miles this year on the pushbike!

My first year in the M3W has seen me do almost 5000km. Whilst I live in Auckland that will probably remain the same but plans to live at the beach in 5 years time may see that reduce.

For other measurable toys, I have had my plane 8.5 years and flown 475 hours in it which is 56 hours per year. About right. The first year was more whilst I did my training and last year a pathetic 26 hours which doesn't justify owning it. However that will increase when we live at the beach and I'm loving it more and more at the moment and flown 6 hours in the last 4 days with more to come tomorrow. Not bad for mid-winter.

+1. The end of August will see the fourth anniversary of ownership of my 4-seater. During this time I have driven 13607 trouble-free miles, or 3402pa on average. I insure on an unrestricted mileage basis as I plan to use it more. I refuse to get caught up in considerations of depreciation/resale value, and - whilst I choose to believe I keep the car in good condition - I will not under-use it simply for the benefit of the next owner.

It is a bit like that with my sail boat. The Morgan seems to have taken most of my leisure time. However with the car out of action with gearbox problems the boat is likely to get a little more attention in the next month.

To get back to the topic the Plus 4 has done 55,000km in 4.5 years, say 12,000km (about 7,500 miles) a year. To put that into perspective I drove 12,500km in 4 weeks on our last trip in Australia: Most of the NSW North Coast, Melbourne, Great Ocean Road to Adelaide, change of vehicle to Land Cruiser and then zig-zag through the "red heart", went to Oonadatta "because it is there" and various National Parks, and in the end to Darwin.

In just under 5 years with my 4/4 I did 30 000 km, so about 6 000 km per year.

I used it as an everyday car to go to work (2,5km away) and back whenever it wasn't raining or threatening rain unless for some reason I needed a larger vehicle that day. We also made trips back to the UK and down to the South of France and to the Alps in it.

When I bought the Mog I vowed that I would use it as much as possible (having failed to get nearly enough use out of my previous toy, a TVR). Finding a space to buy in a private underground car park right behind the pub while the car was on order made using the car on a daily basis much more viable.

Hi, average to date 6000 miles / annum. Should do a lot more but over interests also take some time. But like Hannes I would never ever consider effect on residual value, the MOG was purchased for my pleasure and would not consider any future resale value.
