I've got a lovely red steering wheel, sadly it looks really naff in everything I've fitted it to, so I have come to the conlusion I will have to re-dye it black,

I've googled the whole thing, and it seems that the cost of the kit will cost more than the wheel is worth.

Does anyone have any ideas for a low cost way to turn red into black?

my local car restorer used to refresh tired leather seats/ trim etc: by spraying with cellulose car paint.

It worked quite successfully, so I'm wondering if it is worth de-greasing the steering wheel, masking it off and spraying with a cellulose satin black (aerosol)?

My local garage can turn and wheel or seat black. Always greasy at the same time.

Try Furniture Clinic or Glyptone.
Furniture Clinic do kits to clean, dye and finish leather, as well as videos on their website.
Gliptone will probably do similar.
They can match colours too if you send a small sample if available.

You can also try Technicuir in France. They have a lot of products to clean, repair and colour leather. (See technicuir.com)

Gliptone scuff master is a flexible acrylic leather dye. if you apply it dabbing with a small sponge it will retain the leather grain. You can recolour / restore complete leather interiors with it and the finish is excellent. It does not look like paint and does not flake off. steering wheel should be a doodle, just make sure you degrease thoroughly. no connection just an impressed user.

I think black leather dye will be better than Gliptones Scuffmaster

Scuffmaster is a great product but won't have the intensity of colour to dye red leather to black

You will have to degrease the leather and use a professional leather dye

Good luck, I don't think it will be easy to get a good even finish

personally I would take it to a professional saddle-maker or leather worker or at least get them to have a look and recommend a dye and method

Stewart, i have used stone and white coloured scuff master to re-colour black, you might need two coats but it is an opaque Acrylic paint. Gliptone call it a dye, i think thats a marketing term, i think a 'dye' soakes into the leather, Scuffmaster is a surface paint. I have used it (and other high grade acrylics) to paint on flying jackets in the past so i know it works, the jackets are still good after 15 years.
