Hi Folks, I don't have access to all the UK registration databases here in the US. Can someone there shed some light on my latest mystery.

I have a friend's 52 DHC with a TSI 5222 UK plate. Is this a real registration or just some adornment??

The car supposedly was sent to the US when new.

Cheers,

Mark

I doubt it is a UK registration, TSI is not a letter combination that was used as the letter I could be confused with 1.

Also in the UK a 4 number combination would only have a 2 letter code, for example TS 5222.

It could be a Northern Ireland plate; 3 letters and 4 numerals is their format. What's more, over there I do believe that the letter i has featured in the letters used.

Thanks Peter. That helps. I suspected it was unreal and was only for show.

Ok, but odd, as there is no Northern Ireland is this car's history.

Not exactly true, "I" was allocated to Irish counties.

Looking at the Wikipedia article Vehicle registration plates of the Republic of Ireland it seems TSI was Dublin. However I think Peter's second point is valid, there weren't any 3 letter 4 number combinations.

BTW, over here it's LICENCE ... we know the difference between a noun and a verb. smile

I took too long, other replies got in while I was typing.

Just to clarify, the registration system for Ireland was set up in 1904, before independence, and was still in use in 1952.

I have a registration SJI with 4 numbers presently on retention. It came from a car without any Irish history but which had previously had the registration transferred onto it.

Well it could easily be my spelling . . . or my typing. Neither of which are good. I won't even go into grammar.

Cheers,

I recall a while ago, on another forum, a discussion about why you see so many coaches on the roads with NI registrations. The consensus was that it was the cheapest way of getting a dateless registration. I've also seen NI registrations on wedding and funeral cars, presumably for the same reason.

I'm not sure if the practice still goes on, I've long since stopped noticing registration plates.

Doesn't help Mark at all though as "TSI", if it exists at all, would be Dublin.
