I recently replaced a Texan's Stainless KP with Devol bush. KP was very worn and bush as new. I thought it was Texas Road Grit that did the damage.

Probably best not to show this post to your MOT tester as few check for kingpin/bush wear correctly...
As Spanner Juggler correctly points out, the end bit of the kingpin will show the least wear. The part with the wear is the most used - ie where the slider normally sits.
To check movement, jack car up and support. Either apply brakes with a stick, or recruit someone to push the brake (kids usually love doing this). Then, holding the wheel at 5 past 7, lift (with your hands) and push/pull to feel wear. Repeat at 5 to 5 (it's time for Crackerjack...), then do the same to the other front wheel.
I make the point about the brakes as with them on, the play in the front wheel bearing disappears, and there should be some. None at all risks bearing seizure.

Thanks spanner juggler - its reassuring to me that someone fully understands my poor description of the king pin checking problem.
If and when I find a solution be assured I shall post the info here
Regards and again thanks to one and all for interest shown Ray
ps - just took car for MOT: not to a Mog garage but a 'regular car' company who look after my other family cars(don't want to say who for obvious reasons - read on...) Rear indicator was not earth properly and was shorting through the rear fog lamp; when tester entered results into DOT test page on web, the hand brake was below acceptable reading; the tester 'juggled' the readings from hand brake test results so got a pass; as to indicator problem, he issued me with a failed notice and immediately issued me with a pass notice, knowing full well I would rectify problem once I got home. These 'old time' mechanics are few and far between and worth their weight in gold to true enthusiast like us Mog owners. Long may they last.

the hand brake was below acceptable reading; the tester 'juggled' the readings from hand brake test results so got a pass I've been using the same MOT test garage for 15 years, and 'massaging' the handbrake figures to get a pass has been a regular feature of the annual test. This year, the tester said 'I don't know why we bother to do this' as he drove up towards the brake plates, but when he yanked on the handbrake we got a reading of 29% straight away! Phew.
