The clutch release bearing on my Moss box +8 is squealing so I need to lube it. Never done this before and was surprised when I couldn't find the grease nipple. It's impossible to see down through the hole in the gearbox hump and I can't reach down far enough to feel anything. Am I missing something here? Is there some trick to this? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom

There is a zerk at the end of the bell housing tube on the inside, top, right next to the bulkhead. Should be a flap and a hole in the tranny cover. Very difficult to access. I ordinarily take the steering wheel off and the seat out to give Myself a bit of room. Need grease gun with a flexible hose. Talk to Ron Theroux about this.

As Button says, the grease nipple (zerk) is not at all easy to see. Yes, you can get at it through the hole in the transmission cover, but you need to be sure that the grease is going through the nipple and not escaping around the edge. Flexible hoses on grease guns have a tendency not to sit skewey on the nipple. You could use a mirror and torch after greasing to check for escaping grease. I go to the effort of removing the transmission cover to grease the clutch bearing to be sure that the grease is going where it should. A good mod would be to make an extension so that the nipple is visible just protruding out of the hole in the transmission cover.

Thanks Gents, got 'er done. The zerk is much further down than I had imagined. Tricky job, what with getting the light shining down the hole rather than is your eyes, then working backwards in the mirror. All with your head jammed between the steering column and the firewall. Enough to p**s off the Good Humour Man!

Button, does this zerk actually lube the thrust bearing, it seem too far back to do this.

No. It lubricates the sliding sleeve. The carbon thrust bearing is pressed into the front end of the sleeve.

So as Button and Tony say this zerk only lubes the sleeve, did this cure Tom's squealing?
I ask cos my 1954 DHC has squealed for the last 14,000 miles?? despite regular greasing.
