So I have finally decided on what Headunit to get for my S1 Aero, and inevitably I have started to look at new speakers and so on! Now I know the V8 is a lovely soundtrack, but occasionally when cruising with the roof up it would be nice to have a good audio system, I also think a car like this deserves one.

I was hoping to draw on anyones experience with the S1.. so far I can see two front speakers located in the footwells, they are marked "Dayton VDO". I haven't found any other speakers.

Now I would like to replace these but I have no idea how much room there is in the aperture or what size they are (shes tucked away atm so not easy to get to).

So..

- What size do I need to replace them, and will a top of the range speaker i.e. Alpine fit in the hole?

- I was thinking of getting component rather than co-axial, but is it worth the hassle as the tweeters will need to be seperately located for component. I am no audio guru but would I even notice the difference?

- Is there anywhere to mount rear speakers? Ideally I would want them mounted on the edge/side of the rear shelf area leaving the shelf free for storage.

- I would like to add an under seat subwoofer such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OYGGMXK/r...=I1PG7408UTIR7E will it fit?

Thanks in advance. Its been a while since I did any audio installs and the Morgan is rather erm different to most cars!
I guess at least the speakers aren't mounted in the doors, as they would rattle and sound awful with the lack of sound deadening..

hi,

you first have to remove the existing one.

you will got the diameter you can use and see how deep they are and see also if you have room for fit better (the deeper the better)

for listen separate tweeter you need a full set with filter , same for the subwoofer.

you can notice the different if you pocket is really deep , a normal sound system with just 2 way speaker is not the story as a complete sono with active or passive speaker and from one to several amplifier.

my opinion is a good alpine and 4 decent speaker will do the job you expect , unless you are die hard top sound listener.

PS: i have instal top sono in cars for 7 years ...

I have the S2 which has a different rear shelf arrangement due to the US legislation and petrol tank moving. My head unit is the Becker Indi which has a few extras but is similar to yours. The Amo in those is actually surprisingly good and can drive speakers quite well.

I fitted new FOCAL units as a direct replacement in the rear shelf but did nothing with the front. The size and shape severely restricts the range of speakers available.

I also had one side as VDO but the other was a no-name brand. The difference with the FOCAL in their place was night and middle-of-the-sun-day even without an additional external amp. So my guess is that they are hugely limiting.

It might be worth fitting some of the acoustic mat if the door is dry in your car. It makes them smoother and more rounded.

I will try and get some pictures.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Thanks Alistair, just how different is the rear end on the S2? Always pondered the difference in the rear shelf/petrol tank.

To clarify the new headunit I am buying is an Alpine, the Becker unit is being replaced. smile

I think the front speakers are 4 inch or 4.5 inch. They screw into the footwell, and protrude into the bonnet area where their back is covered by a black plastic cover. Without changing the rear cover you are very limited to what you can fit as they can't be very deep.

Exactly....they are 4" but anything with a cast metal chassis and a good magnet would need a new cover. Not impossible, but I agree with Alistair, replace the back ones first......

'problem is, (to the best of my knowledge),the S1 did not have any speakers fitted in the rear - only the front.

I would be interested if anyone has summoned up the courage to mount them on the rear alloy 'bulkhead',just above the tank...?
This would necessitate cutting holes in the alloy panel in what is quite an awkward location.

I have an Alpine powered sub fitted up - front and currently have these fitted in the rear -

- sound is excellent and they do look good.I have, however decided that they take up too much valuable interior storage so looking at a different solution (see above wink )

That's quite interesting James, I did wonder if you had looked into this further as I know you have made a few entertainment mods to your Aero. smile

I have a few ideas but I want to keep the weight down, and I don't want to cut holes in her either. The few locations I thought might be feasible for something like a set of 6x9s would be:

- Behind the seats either on the floor or mounted vertically - I guess these could be affixed to the carpet if there is nowhere to mount them.
- On the rear shelf.

Peter / Andrew thanks for confirming that for me, I guess I will need to remove the originals and see how much clearance I have - or get fabricating a new cover! smile

I have had the passenger speaker out of mine as I ordered replacement Harman Kardon that I thought were the right size, external diameter was fine but the depth and the inside diameter of the back cowl that they fit into is very restricting and the fouled on it. I gave up having discovered that the one I thought was rattling and knackered was making the noise due to the speaker cable vibrating against the speaker cone, once I repositioned the cable it now actually sounds quite good.

Thanks Adrian, I presume the originals unscrew from inside the cabin?
I will have to remove them soon and measure the space smile.
