The S1 was in production for some time. When the S2 came out it was changed to allow the car to pass US regulations. This meant the fuel tank needed to be moved more upright between the rear wheels.
This gave more boot space but reduced the rear shelf I believe. I will get a couple of pictures at the weekend and photobucket them for you.
The Focals I fitted really do have some guts. I can hear them clearly at 80ish with the lid down. Allegedly.
As for the 6x9 speakers. These do give a lot more punch but also need more depth, space and also stiffening as they really can move about when driven hard. If you are willing to pay a bit then some of the 2 part (bass/mid & tweeter) combinations around can give a surprisingly good effect for a lot less damage. Re the back panel protection in the footwell. Consider applying a Dave patch (neoprene)and metal deflector panel outside of it ?

Thanks Adrian, I presume the originals unscrew from inside the cabin? I will have to remove them soon and measure the space  . Nick, a bit of investigation suggests that yes, to remove the standard speaker you have to lay, head first, in the footwell. On Tarka, which has an Aero Chassis, there is about 3" between the back of the speaker cover and the bonnet. This suggests a much more meaty speaker might be fitted, such as the Focal PC100, but of course a waterproof cover would be needed and ideally it would be rigid and properly filled with wadding. A nice 4mm welded aluminium box, perhaps....!

I dont understand this thread. I havent had a single soft top sport car where wind and exhaust noise didnt shred anything you could get out of a sound system. Sure you can hear it ( as can the neighbourhood if you turn the volume up far enough but you still dont get quality.

I have come to the conclusion that get clarity in the face of wind/exhaust/traffic noise a radio needs to have quality speakers that can be driven without adding distortion and that in turn requires a powerful amplifier. Certainly it isn't HiFi, but for Radio 4 or 5Live Sports Extra this works. Listening, I agree, to music it isn't that helpful, but the only time I listen to music in Tarka is when I'm moving slowly in traffic.....

Talking nonesense Howard.
I can listen to music in my smart roadster at over 70 with the roof off.
Careful placement of quality speakers and sitting position setup equalisation via mic plugged into quality head unit and it's more than doable.
Using the GALA pulse the Volume is speed controlled.
Sitting in mine when parked up it sounds very reasonable, when you exit the car and the focused sound field the music emanating from the car is minimal.
The source is very important MP3 is a very poor choice to listen to if deciding on diskless digital format then use a lossless format.

Thanks Alistair, I must get her out of the garage when the weather perks up and have a proper look. Perhaps I will get something fabricated if there is not enough room, I shall keep this thread updated when I get around to it.

Please, a good video....  Having had a good look this afternoon to get at the speakers it will be necessary to remove the knee protection pads. Otherwise it will be virtually impossible for anyone over the age of 5 to get at the speakers..... Anyone know how they are fixed?
