Thanks to you all for the info and pictures. Your answers throw up another question. If unfortunate enough to get a puncture on the road, where is the best place to position the MMC scissor jack.

Where a crossmember joins the chassis side rails.

My rear diy beam is similar to DaveW version. It has pads on the ends to mate up with the chassis with metal reinforcement. I had a length of leftover hardwood from an old mantlepiece so used that. Stronger than softwoods. The jack is a Clarke low entry from Machine Mart.

Just a quick point that obviously a trolley Jack and getting the right jacking point either with a beam or without a beam is just to lift the car safely

The ultimate aim is to get some stands underneath that mechanically lock to keep the car up if you are working underneath

Do not work underneath a car just supported by a trolley Jack

A good friend of mine and a car nut nearly killed himself when a car collapsed on him supported by a trolley Jack - he knew the risk but was tempted to do a job that he thought would take seconds

Surprised that no one has mentioned my preference for getting under the Mog, i use car ramps, you know the steel framed jobs. ok they rely on the wheels so cant work on brakes etc but excellent for most jobs under the car and much simpler and safer than jacking. If i need all 4 wheels up then the trolley jack and stands do the other end.

Good point Stewart, another thing to bear in mind when using a trolley Jack is that the surface the Jack is on should be flat and smooth with nothing like bits of gravel etc to stop it rolling freely as the Jack rises up. If the Jack can't roll in in under the car as it rises then the position of the Jack on the on the spot you placed it on the car will change, with the potentitial for a great deal of expensive damage at the least.
I always sweep the garage floor clear around the trolley Jack before using it, never use it on a carpet, and if I can't find a smooth spot where I am jacking I put down some heavy ply for it to sit on.
