I suspect the ACU just hasn't had time to sort out the necessary amendment to this particular rule as they are too occupied with their main role of bike racing. I have loads of respect for the ACU.

Absolutely. If one wishes to race under the auspices of an organisation dedicated to the sport of motorcycle racing, one could hardly be surprised if they wish to consider your vehicle as a motorcycle. It may be a bit of a faff, but a rear view mirror has got the capability to cause a great deal of damage to you in a crash, and it is sensible to require their removal (as should anything that could cause injury and isn't necessary for the safe operation of the vehicle). You'll be needing to take a set of tools with you anyway to check the car over, adjust the tyre pressures, and so on, so an extra half an hour whipping off the lookbackascopes isn't too much extra effort. BTW, doesn't the ACU require that oil drain plugs are lockwired? They always used to when I was hill climbing? And look on the bright side - if you stuff it into the bushes, at least you won't damage the mirrors!

The latest ACU handbook can be viewed online, but from memory, the answer to your point is "yes". Also if an oil breather is fitted, it has to vent into a catch tank. (That is for track racing - the details vary slightly depending on which branch of the sport is pursued)

Yes, Austin and I are now both proficient lockwire apprentices and able to comment "nice lockwiring" when required without smiling.

A bit fiddlie to get to. You can access the nut if you take the panel off the skuttle under the bonnet. What might work is to remove the panel (10+ sheet metal screws) at home as I think you can run without it. Then the nuts can be easily reached. Unless my car's different it's much easier than that. Just remove the trim on the underside of the scuttle in the cockpit (Velcro) and the inner nut is immediately accessible.

I had a go at pulling the bottom of the scuttle trim and yes it's held on with Velcro!
Once pulled off the Velcro the trim just slides out from around the dash. When removed the nut at the bottom of the mirror stalk is visible and accessible. Easy Peasey!!
One less excuse not to go racing!!!
