My 3W is just passing 1070 miles (bought a few weeks ago with 371 miles on it).

It has developed a new rattle. Sounds like a large panel vibrating against a frame or rigid object. It's on the right side of the car; sounds like it is just behind the passenger seat. And it only happens when I turn right. (??)

Have checked all the panels. Checked heat shield/exhaust.

I am guessing it is the black plastic rear trunk liner vibrating against something. I thought I'd put a thin layer of weather stripping around the base as well as strips where the front vertical portion might rest against the frame or other objects.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Check the tightness of your fuse box.

As it's a Brooklands you have, I would check the exhaust system again. Some cars have had a problem with the lower seat belt mounting bolt being too long and the end of it vibrating against the body panel, it may need shortening a bit to give some clearance.

It's behind the left side. Funny how mine is pretty quiet when riding solo. Put a passenger in and it's noisy. I zip tied move tight against the frame and it became MUCH better behaved.

Thanks. Gives me more to check.

Odd that it didn't rattle like that when I first got the M3W and has increased over time as if something is getting loose.

Doesn't matter if someone is in the right side seat or not. Car needs to be rolling. Sitting still, wheels turned to the right, no rpm will create the noise. But 2300-3200 rpms with any right pressure on the steering wheel creates this loud noise of something rattling/tapping against a large panel on the right, just behind the passenger seat.

I took the plastic trunk/boot liner out and tapped on everything I could find. Couldn't create the noise.

Will put the car on a lift today when I do a fluid change. Maybe something will become apparent. Will check for the lower seat belt attachment bolts.

What's life without a few gremlins taunting you?

I had suspected the rattle was from the plastic boot/trunk liner. Nope. Removed the liner, drove the car, same rattle.

Had the car on a lift.

Isn't the fuse box. Tapped/pushed everything I could reach. No obvious culprits. May try to slide pieces of weatherstripping into gaps and see if that helps.

Finally found it.

The band clamp on the right side exhaust near the front wheel was loose (and getting looser).

Interesting that when cold, it was relatively firm and I couldn't get the exhaust to rattle. But when warm it allowed the exhaust to flex and rattle against the heat shield.

I'm hoping that tightening it will also get the check engine light to go off as it seems to be sensitive to pressure imbalances. Will see. For now, it's great to jettison the rattle.

Hmmmm. I have that right turn rattle as well, so I just ran out to the garage ( it's pouring out!). Both clamps took a good deal of tightening! I'd love to have some torque specs, but I did my best to not snap anything, lol. Can't wait to check it out. Thanks. It'll be a few days since we're supposed to have rain until Monday. Feels like MO's homeland out there.

And, Christmas comes early....

The check engine light went off. Will see if it stays off.
