Is the stock gearknob threaded or held in place by the Allen headed grub screw?

It depends on the gearbox and the year of the car. the older cars with Ford T9 boxes have threaded knobs.

That's great Robert, thanks. Mines due to start build this Wednesday. First thing to go will be the std gearknob. I have a number of M10 threaded options, but not a slip-on 😒

On mine once you removed the factory one there was a load of insulating tape covering the original Mazda threaded shaft ,. I can't remember the size but I got a wooden one made for a Mazda and it screwed straight on .

Great thanks for the info. That's the reason I asked, I was trying to buy a gearknob so I could fit it at the factory. I was told the shaft had an M10 thread, which is the standard Mazda gear lever. However, I then heard of gearknobs coming loose and being held in place just by a grub screw. So I wondered if the shaft was actually threaded and it appears it is. I now have a collection of five gearknobs, bakelite, aluminium and wood. Some threaded, some slip-on, so hopefully one will suit!

I think they shorten the later gearsticks Glenn by cutting off the threaded section.
Here is a photo from the factory.
