Simon, In principle an easy question but very difficult in practice as you know! In my shortlist would be the 911 Turbo (997 Gen 2 PDK), RS6 (5.0 V10) and 612 Scaglietti. Would plump for the 911 with the same rationale as you. Regards, Robert P.S. What do you think of this? 599 GTO

Sorry guys I'm going to have to cheat a little on this, My needs to be large enough for the kids, able to act as a mobile office, carry assorted junk and be fast and comfortable. Most importantly a little different Now for the necessary mods , heart transplant and replacement with Porker engine, luxury mobile office internal fit out, and given the current road conditions optional 4 wheel drive. Still leaves room for a bike rack for 1560, the solution to everyones problem.

Would have to be Audi RS4 Avant, although I do like Golfs, and I do like Diesels so a 3.0 Avant would do me nicely. But I don't need a daily driver. And have hired loads of cars when travelling with (ahem) baggage. Unfortunately the last hire car (two years ago) was a Zafira. What a load of shite........ Anyway getting back to the question.............. I could equally be happy with a real Land Rover due to the potential to add neoprene accessories. I don't really think I'm a 911 person. I'm certainly not a Beemer person. I really like the Ferrari 456, and if only my drive was wider..... So - no real answer. Or rather the answer today won't be the answer tomorrow. A nicely restored Alvis TD, AC Greyhound or (60's)Lagonda Rapide would hit the spot. Blah blah blah............

For me, it would be a 911 4S. The 4-seats makes it practical. The 4WD gives a safety net for the longer trips I do, in all weathers and often venturing into parts of Europe who suffer from more snow than ourselves. It is an attractive car and the look of it appeals to me. On the weekends it would be a willing track car and respond well to spirited driving. Lastly, they are well engineered and reliable; which for me, is probably the key factor in a daily driver. I'm with you on this Simon, with one major difference - I prefer the 911 Carrera as a purer driving experience. Virtually the same performance, 0.2 sec slower to 100 kph for example, but without unnecessary differential/drive shafts all spinning round. If the snow was bad, I'd let the train/plane take the strain for those few weeks each year! If I was persuaded that 4-wd was essential, then I would have to follow Robert and go the Turbo route - 911 Turbo (997 Gen 2 PDK). I have not driven a PDK Turbo, but I am sure from my experience with this box, and all the road tests that this car must be fantastic.

Have yet to drive a 911 Turbo (997 Gen 2 PDK) too but expect that it will be stunning.
That said having previously had 996/7 Carrera 4S and 996 Turbo found the normally aspirated cars every bit as enjoyable if perhaps even a shade more so. Therefore can understand your comment as regards 911 Carrera - to quote a well worn cliche less is more! However personally if I was opting for a rear wheel drive 911 the GT3 would be hard to beat both on performance and looks although it might lose out on daily 'driveability'.
