I have had my 2002 Plus8 with Gems efi for nearly 5 years. Now as 52k on the clock with my annual contribution about 7k.
This summer I did my first measured mpg and it came out at 30mpg. Mixed driving so no bias as far as I could tell.
This was with 95RON standard fuel.
No upgrades apart from K&N filter.
I am ok with that figure as it is what I expected before buying the car, from research. If I was worried about the cost I wouldn't have bought the car.
The driveability and enjoyment outway the slightly higher cost to my previous Mog, a 1993 4/4 with 1.6 cvh efi.
I have just filled up with V-Power as a test both of engine reaction and mpg.
Tank1 ignored to allow the Gems to "learn" with the fuel.
I sense the engine does run well already but nothing to jump sometsaults about. I think the engine is a bit smoother.
mpg test next up.
I can then decide whether to stick with V-Power or revert. At the moment it is too soon but I do like the perceived effect on engine running. Maybe I should have used my OBD diagnostic to record before and after readings of live data. I could do it in reverse I suppose. Wait and see.

We recently did a trip of 795km with the new VW Polo. In mixed Autostrada and ordinary roads, including a little stop start traffic, it returned an astonishing mileage. 39.54 litres of petrol, less than a tank full for the whole trip, gave us 4.97 litres per 100km or just under 57 mpg (imperial). Being turbo petrol it gives excellent real would performance despite being only a 1.2 engine developing 90CV. It would be fantastic in a 4/4.
