Hi Everyone,

Heres a new one on me (at least)
Driving along quite gently on Friday, everything was fine, then all of a sudden - no power, coasted to a halt. No misfire or suggestion that anything was wrong.
Checked the plugs etc, eventually found that the reset button under the bonnet had tripped.
Pushed it again & everything was fine for the rest of my journey home (30 miles approx).
Does anybody know what trips this switch. and what I need to check?
I know that it cuts the power to the fuel pump - dawned on me when I was trying to figure out what was wrong.

Anyone else had this experience - what was the cause?

Thanks again
Andrew

I had mine kick out when traveling reasonably slowly in traffic, didn't see a raised manhole cover hit the cross member under transmission. Apparently its a safety device when car gets a firm whack somewhere.

Designed to cut the fuel pump in a crash. Activates by way of sudden movements, so not pothole friendly..! This may have been the cause here, perhaps?

So if he cut with any reason, consider to change it, i have read several case where the car stop and won't restart due to this kill switch

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your response - nothing I remember that caused it to trip - no nasty potholes or anything, just driving along nice and smoothly - had already done 40 miles without incident.
I did notice when I reset it that it didn't push in smoothly - seemed quite notchy - if you know what I mean

My safety switch did not trip out when I was hit hard in the back in July but the impact did over £18,000 worth of damage, all being financed by the third party's insurance.
Car is still is loads of pieces at Williams Automobiles waiting on parts from MMC.

I know Chris99 has had this inertia switch fail a couple of times and it seems to be an up and coming issue for the M3W.

Is it absolutely needed - no!!!!

Mine was tripping randomly anywhere between 2 -50 miles at a time. No relationship to the road - it would be fine on a bumpy back road then trip miles later on a smooth dual carrigeway - or visa -versa!

As a temporary fix I cable tied a washer over the top of the switch to keep it locked shut.

Replacing the switch made no differece and I eventually cured it by cable tying the wires leading to the switch to the battery box. I think they were vibrating and wobbling the inertia switch enough to trip it.
