I'm thinking of getting a dehumidifier for the garage, it doesn't get very damp but over time tools do get a light rust coating and anything fabric smells a bit.
Any guidance as to what type/model are best would be appreciated.

Any cheap unit from a decent hardware store will do the job.
I got a no name unit some 10 years ago and it still works. Energy consumption is similar to a freezer. In any case you should go for a unit with a hygro-sensor.

There are basically two types of dehumidifier - a simple one which works like a refrigerator or freezer, usually cheap and reliable - downside is they dont work below 8c. The other sort is a continuos desiccant type which works down to freezing point - more expensive and probably better for car storage use. The one I have is a Meaco DD8L Junior Desiccant Dehumidifier 8 L. Works well and adds heat to the garage, though not as energy efficient as the other sort. As they say - you pays your money....

I also have the Meaco DDL and am very happy with it.
I thought I had done a super job insulating my garage but was amazed by the amount of water this unit removed from the air.

I bought a DeLonghi because it was Which? magazine's recommended buy. It's worked continuously for the last nine years without a problem. It shifts about 5 litres of water a day.

If getting a dehumidifier then before you do ensure you seal the garage from the outside world, otherwise all you are doing is trying to dry the planet as well as the garage!

It will be inefficient and cost more.

Absolutely essential garage/storage amenity in Spring, Summer and Fall in my climatic environment. Very cold (below freezing)and dry outside temps during several Winter months negates dehumidifier usage, the area is heated however. As mentioned, your building/storage space must be well-sealed and weatherproof in order to obtain the intended and cost-effective result.

I have a DD3/DD322/Xdry Classic Desiccant Dehumidifier, great unit and removes a staggering amount of water all year around. Cost about £210.

What is the air humidity one is looking for and the dehumidifiers are set?
I would expect 50-60% range.
Do people measure? I am starting now!

For the 2 Steinways of my wife humidity is recommended between 50-65 %, and should not be below 40 % and not be above say 75 %. Offcourse stability is prime driver here to keep things in tune. As for the Morgan prevention of rot and corrosion is key.

The 50-60% range is also recommended for wooden floors, to avoid the water content of the wood to changes too much and in this way limit effect of changes in shape and form. I understand that in 50-60% air humidity range, wood has about 10% water content.

You would expect my OCD to drive some sort of ideal state in the garage, but to be honest it's just "suck it and see".

Generally speaking my measuring device shows above 30% unless its a hot summers day in which case it can drop below 30%.

But normally its more like 40+% and on damp winter days will push much higher.

I don't recall 'the science' but humidity is temperature dependant so a high percentage at low temp is not the same as a high percentage at high temp.

So long as there's no obvious moisture and no furry spanners I'm happy. My Roadster has survived this environment for eight years without the wood crumbling to dust.
