I thought that shudder at speed meant warped discs.
I had this on the back of my S1 several years back and replaced the discs. Warping occurs more easily on rears because handbrake can be put on when discs are hot and this can apparently cause an issue.
Upgrade, why? Haven't found any shortage of braking on my Aero 8, including some agressive driving down Swiss Alp passes.
Assuming you have the thickness, skimming is definitely the way to go, and discs are fairly easily removed.
Cheers
Philip

Hi Phillip, This started this summer during over a 3500 mile trip through France and down to the Costa Blanca and back.

It seems that this is a common problem on S1's! According to the factory skimming, presumably off the car, hasn't worked for them hence I haven't tried it. My 'skimmer' is in Ruthin, a scenic 3 1/2 hour drive for you. I'm sure they must be someone down south for you though? Try the motorsports specialists.

Just done a quick search and Motec Auto in Haverfordwest and Davies Motors in Cardigan are both listed as having Pro-cut on car skimming machines. Worth a phone call. Keep us informed !

They are Morgan specific but, as I said before Mulfab had their last set in stock a few months ago at £400 and something. Personally I would try skimming first at £100-£120 When the S1 was in production someone made drilled discs and 6 pot caliper conversions. I have searched fruitlessly to no avail for these. Perhaps someone on here will remember?

Personally I would try skimming first at £100-£120 When the S1 was in production someone made drilled discs and 6 pot caliper conversions. I have searched fruitlessly to no avail for these. Perhaps someone on here will remember? We made a 350mm 6 pot upgrade kit for the S1 at Mulfab, we only ever sold a couple of sets so didn't continue it. The S1 front discs are Morgan specific and are one casting, with directional vents. This means that one disc is rotating "the wrong way" for its vents to work properly and this can cause overheating issues and warping. However, its more likely as mentioned earlier in this thread, that there is a pad shadow or pickup on the disc where the car has been standing. This causes an inconsistent friction surface as the pad shadow is more "grabby" than the disc itself. This causes brake judder and can feel like a warped disc. I frequently bead blast the discs on the racecars to remove any trace of pad material build up, especially if I am trying out different pad materials. A light skim should remove the problem Simon @ SiFab.co.uk

Nick CW James BW ... cleaning is dangerous!!!! Lessons for us! Nooooo! Seriously though, judder isn't caused by washing your car (unless you never ever drive it and let the discs get so rusty with years of washing that the pads can't clean it off! However highly unlikely as cars get left for months outside with no issues).. it is usually caused by warped discs. This can be a result of not bedding them in correctly or by prolonged excessive use without cooling and then applying the brakes in traffic whilst they are still boiling hot, the pads create a hot spot on the disc as it sits there with excess residual heat and this can cause them to warp. This is why on track days you have cool down laps, and most cars are parked with their handbrakes off for a while in the pits afterwards to let the brakes cool.
