As a classic car enthusiast I have long coveted the idea of owning a classic Morgan and thought what better place to come for advice than this forum. I currently own a Mercedes R107 500SL but realise the Morgan driving experience is very different to that. In the past I have owned a P6 Rover 3500, a Triumph Vitesse and a Triumph Stag which might be more comparable in terms of ride/ performance (?).
Question is I have around £25k to spend and wondered if I should be looking at an earlier and/ or presumably less good condition +8 (which I guess I am naturally drawn to) or a better/ newer +4? Or anything else? What engines and options should I be looking at etc etc. I know the general rule of thumb is go for condition, not age but also recognise that there were years when, for example, steel became aluminium and when longer doors and wider bodies in certain models came in - I'm a big chap and need a little extra room
I've done the factory tour and realise I need to get out and experience some test drives but in the mean time all advice for a Morgan novice most welcome.
I have owned a '63 4/4 with a 1348cc 109E engine. I loved it on the back roads. Not so much on the Interstate (Motorway).
I now own a '63 +4-4Str with OD and lots of other stuff to make it road friendly. I have been across the U.S. about 4 times plus shipping to the UK for the LeMans Morgan 50th. Comfortable, handles well and as it is a 4 str loads of luggage space.
I built a +8 Bitsa out of wrecked etc. Morgan parts. Love the low end torque and ease of long trips. But watch out. Some Cheeky 4/4 on a curvy road will be pushing You to get out of the way.
I also own a '61 DHC with Zetec engine and 5 speed. The original engine went into a Race Car years ago. But the light, responsive, modern (1984) Zetec make this a unique Morgan. But does have limitations when compared to the +8 or 4/4 for sure.
Good luck on your testing. But think You will fall in love with each Morgan You drive. I have been at this for 35 years and I can't make up My Mind.
