It was definately a metric allen key to undo mine, which is what I would have expected since its not part of the engine.

The impact driver suggestion would be no good as the headlamp is too fragile not to mention bulb within.

Had a look at mine this morning and it looks possible to get mole wrench adjusted to grip tightly on the outer part of head allowing twisting undone after liberal WD40 treatment, and without damaging rim. Just need to source a fresh screw then - suggest stainless.

Could you solder a sacrificial key into it having a replacement ready? Or plastic metal.

Richard - sounds like yours has something to get hold of - mine is inset if anything , so 'grabbing' it is not an option unfortunately.

Tim - are you thinking soft or hard solder ? Woudlnt soft just snap off , and hard would mean getting it extremely hot and destroy the wiring in the tube - or am I missing something?

I am wondering if I can grind it out with a fine bit in a dremmel and hopefully the bits will clear. This baby is not going to budge by rotation. Then once I get the tube out the grub screw bears on clear the threads out with a tap , even going up a size in the threads if necessary.
Needles to say I am going to use a headed screw to replace it.

Sorry to hear that - just assumed it was the same as mine. Maybe not posible to cut a screwdriver slot into screw head with junior hacksaw either, which would have been another possibility.

Nothing less than brazing something to the existing head would allow enough torque to be applied to remove it. The heat required would create an awful mess though.

Given the fragile nature of the headlamp therefore, drilling or grinding off screw head (with suitable Dremel bur) is the only option I can see working.

thanks for bringing the existence of this screw to my attention. Mine need snugging up. I will give it some ACF50 as well...

Oops, replied in a hurry and mixed up the cambox cover bolt and the headlight screw

If you can get a simple flat ended punch into the socket and give it a couple of sharp taps that should shock it loose without any damage. The trouble with soft stainless grub screws is that as the key starts to spread the socket it also swells the thread and makes it tighter so a tap in the bottom of the socket to loosen it before you start twisting is always good. Sorry if this comes a bit late but maybe it will help someone else.

As a postscript I managed to drill them out in the end without damaging the tube they clamp.
My next job is to tap them 5mm for a new screw. I plan to use
stainless cap headed , so I can grab it with something if required
And plenty of Copperslip.
