Sorry to break it to you - but it was the shift in votes from Obama to Trump (2% of blacks and latino's respectively) and more significantly for women, particularly in swing states that handed it to Trump
Trump performed better in ALL minorities than Romney did 4 years ago

Interesting thread, chaps!
I was surprised to wake up to the result, but have thought for some time how cleverly Trump was playing a very weak hand. He spoke in very short "sound bites", he made people listen, he spoke (to my mind) absolute rot, but it was at least simple and comprehensible rot, and that seemed to get through to a lot of people, whereas Hilary was just the same old establishment rubbish, and people switched off.
Yesterday I was amazed to hear a woman, who described herself as a Christian, on the 1.00pm R4 news say that she couldn't vote for Clinton, because a woman as President of the USA was not right. What?? She was going to probably vote for one of the independents. At least she was not going to vote for Trump, but I guess some women must have.
We are living in a new age where social media gets through, very quickly, to people, and it is possible to manipulate views very rapidly in strange ways.
I think Trump played it brilliantly to get the result, and there are lessons to be learned. Pollsters are unable to predict any close result any more.

I had a feeling the election would go this way partly because in the last few weeks news reports showed Trump talking passionately to huge crowds. Clips of Hillary focused on whatever celebrity she had brought along to sing. Entertaining, but no message

I understand why so many are referring to us Americans as stupid. I myself woke up very disappointed with my country. But Hillary did win the popular vote, which means OVER half of Americans are disappointed with the outcome of this election. There have already been numerous protests and more are expected. Please do not think that all Americans made this choice. Everyone I have encountered today has been shaking their head, many used the term "in shock." My country is severely polarized and I while I was devastated at Trump's win (I can hardly type that without tears) I can only hope that this experience in some way humbles him (if such a thing is possible) when he realizes just what he is in for. It appears as though perhaps he did not expect this - I can't help but wonder if the thought "Oh s*#t - now I have to actually do this" did not run through his mind. Many Americans are filled with disappointment, dread and anger at this outcome. Only time will tell how justified those fears might be. We can only hope for the best, and try to hang on for dear life to some of the services and rights that Trump has promised to abolish (to the delight of some Americans whose mindset I just can't comprehend.) One thing is for sure, the USA is even more sexist than it is racist. I bet Bernie Sanders would have won had he been the Democratic candidate, as many wanted. Dear Tcherek It just goes to show how flawed the Electoral College system is in this day and age. I don't believe it was ever intended to work this way and was designed at a time when a good deal of the population was illiterate and/or uneducated. Whatever the case it is not entirely democratic for a country that criticises others for a lack of democracy. Personally I am not in favour of elected presidents. I much prefer the system used in Australia to appoint the Governor General or in Italy to appoint the President. In both cases they have fairly limited powers but still perform important tasks. I don't hold much with hereditary heads of state either but that is another issue.

Since Hillary didn't win over half the populist vote, more than half the population would have been disappointed with the result no matter which way you decided the winner.

It's a protest vote against gridlock in Washington, political elitism, political correctness and business as usual. Hilary represents all of the above. If the Dems had nominated Bernie Sanders the same phenomenon might have worked for them, but unfortunately a lot of Americans don't understand the difference between democratic socialism and communism.

I agree with your friend, who's had 30 years of watching the steady erosion of the living standards of American blue-collar middle class. I've watched the same thing since the 70s from the perspective of a government economist. It's been especially disheartening to observe the indifference to this sad process from politicos of both parties. The establishments of both parties have other priorities. The grievances of Trump's supporters are very justified IMHO, but the tragedy is that Trump is the wrong man to be in charge of this movement. He (and his advisers) have expounded upon many problems but he doesn't have realistic solutions. Some of his proposals (such as tax cuts, ignoring climate change, and discontinuing Obamacare) are wrong IMO and will cause incredible conflict. He doesn't have the personality to do make compromises Washington-style, and will probably be bogged down in numerous disputes both large and small. He will probably preside over another downward slip, and America's problems will be even worse in 4 years.

Trump does have a sense of humour. The BBC are reporting that he has offered the role of US Ambassador to the EU to Nigel Farage....

I pretty much see Trump doing a similar thing as Reagon, both not pure Politians, but were willing to put their neck on the line and both not needing to put their hand in the Till like the Clintons. Like the UK people the American population and many third world rebelious parties are sick of greedy Politians lining there own pockets.
