Just put my new plate on the Roadster. I must admit that I have been faffing about and procrastinating about this for over a year! Doh! Anyways after a false dawn with a plate seller - who claimed to have a plate I wanted but did not ( it has to come up for Auction) I bought one off the DVLA site. BTW this plate seller was not scamming me - just not telling the facts/truth. After a few emails/calls I got the impression that much of this market can be a murky place!Fortunately I was on my toes for once and avoided getting involved with money changing hands. But do take care is my advice. Anyway - the DVLA were great. They confirmed that the plates I was interested in did not exist. And had never been issued. So off to the DVLA site. I had shortlisted a few numbers - but they were getting too serious ££ for me to justify the cost. Then to my joy this number came up - at I think a bargain price. The paperwork came through next day - and more delight - you can now "transfer" numbers online. A great service. So.... MV60 MOG is now born!!

The plate they want to buy from you is for some reason not worth much but the one they want to sell you is three times its real figure !

I had a very similar experience with a plate seller who didn't have title to an advertised plate. The plate didn't materialise and he then tried to sell me a variety of plates which I didn't want. So I also went to DVLA direct.......
Did you remember to tell your insurance?

Did you remember to tell your insurance? Exactly the same happened to me All these cherished number sales companies selling nothing they own or even know if they are up for sale

I think we can say it has little regulation !
Wife bought me a plate for our Coupe, lets say £1000. This year they approached us and said someone was keen to buy a plate with the 3 letters ours has. Offer to buy it from us for £500, maybe £550. All the others of this format on their page are uniformly above £1000.
We have a spare private plate we had on an old golf so we asked them if they wanted to sell this for us. They send the paperwork which means you have to only offer it through them, cannot sell it directly, owe them a cut etc etc. They don't buy it, no money changes hands. Not heard from them since.
We got our other plate directly from DVLA website. It is very good at helping you find old and new if you play with words.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I had a good dig into this subject when planning to get the red car and the advice I got fro numerous people was that the resale value of anything but a non dated plate was negligible, with obvious exceptions for a plate that spelled out something significant. So for example, chances of re-selling G1PJB are small, but PJB1 is a different matter. I still went ahead and wasted £1500.

Had one this week, young lady showing no ins on database. Had asked to transfer policy last May. Old car still insured new one not ! Sorted on the spot but charged £25 for correcting their mistake.

While at TOTH this year we chatted to a plate dealer. He claimed to have sold £9k of plates that day! He gave a couple of quotes for plates whilst chatting too. They seemed "generous". Several years ago I was reading about personalised plates and the advice was contact DVLA for info and details, availability etc as dealers often didn't have the numbers pre bought. Also watch for the periodic auctions of plates. From quck searches of the DVLA site there are lots of potential numbers available for £250 with some creeping higher.
