I have bought all of my private plates direct from the DVLA, they actually work out cheaper than from a 3rd party as the transfer fee is included in the price.

I would like a dateless plate one day, but they only sell those via auctions and it appears to be difficult to search/find anything relevant..😔

In Western Australia, personalised plates are around $500 - $600 and there are some limitations other than availability. Not all plates are tradeable, and you must have a certificate to say you can trade the plate.

You are supposedly not allowed certain vehicle names, but there are ways around this as I have done on my Morgans.

I bought a personalised plate for my tin top 20+ years ago, it is my three initials plus the number 3, I paid £2250 for it.
Around six years ago I had to get it valued because I was getting divorced and the ex's solicitor was trying to squeeze every penny out of me. Probably the best known registration plate company offered me £700 (that was good for me at that time), they had the same three initials plus the number 9 for sale at that time for £9000.
They wrote to me numerous times offering to buy it!
Similar with N22 MOG, I'd bought it 8 years ago for £275 and they offered me £90 2 years later.
Neither were bought as an investment and I don't intend to sell them but I was surprised at the mark up the traders seem to work on.

I think the whole industry apart from DVLA is a bit shady.
I was lucky that two of mine came with cars so didn't cost anything and it's amusing when observers try to work out the meaning when there isn't one. Apart from costing nothing, which to a Yorkshireman is gold.

I bought my dateless plate from the for sale section on TM, 44 YYX not particularly relevant to anything but a nice fifties plate. Paid about £700. DVLA auctions often have similar meaningless plates with estimates at similar prices.

The whole cherished plate business is fascinating. There are those who want their initials or name on a plate and will seemingly pay a vast amount of money, even though they may not be relevant to anyone else, and therefore have a very limited resale market, those, like me who just like a plate that is non dating and short enough to remember, a problem many of us are finding as we become older, and people who are willing to pay a lot for one that may increase in value, and those who wouldn't be seen dead with a 'vanity' plate.

I suppose it creates a market for something that would otherwise have no value !

The really weird aspect to my mind is that if one drives around with a number plate that reads something like W4 LLY or whatever it's generally deemed to be cool, but if one were to drive around with a large plastic sign fixed to the front of one's car that said "WALLY", people would just point and laugh.

Go figure, as they say...

My plate came from an advert in Miscellany. (£225)
I like the fact that it is an old Exeter plate (from a 1958 A35)
Easy to remember, but otherwise meaningless.
