Thanks everyone for the replies. It would appear that the numbers have had different meanings over the years - chassis number, engine number or employee number ... or even nickname.

I don't quite understand the logic of matching the bonnet to a number stamped on the side of the engine, rather than the one staring you in the face on the chassis plate! However I can confirm that, as Arwyn and Richard both suggested, 3178 are the last 4 digits of my engine number. I'm embarrassed that I didn't notice before!

Depends when the chassis plate was attached, if it wasn't attached prior to painting then the easiest number to match to would be the engine number!

Be interesting to know when the factory stamps the numbers into the chassis or attaches the plate to the bulkhead.

I remember reading in the MTWC Bulletin an analysis of the FType production and apparently there are missing numbers in production runs due to cancelled orders

so as i can tell i have my chassis number on the aft side and the back wood cross beam has a different number stamped into the wood. i have the matching block number without the letter prefixes on the bonnet. what is the number stamped on the wood?????

The body frame has its own number. Not related to engine number or chassis number.

Here is an example from 1960-1961- the bonnet hinge number is five digits, stamped upside down as viewed with the bonnet on the car, matching the engine number, 175198, a Ford 100E.
