I'm surprised that posters on here, all of whom will have had past issues with their PC , are so confident they are willing to risk their lives to a computer. What happens for example when the car picks up a computer virus through its 4G connection? Or when its hard disks fail. Or during an electrical storm. And can you imagine the problems of the average garage mechanic trying to service one! ooo

Dont forget that if these cars become commonplace there will be a fair proportion of their human passengers who dont have driving licenses and who cant take over. Even larger numbers of those who are way out of practice.

As for coming home from the pub. Dream on - the lwa will likely still treat you as "in charge".

Tim, maybe when you've driven them for a while you will understand...

It's not only lane 2 blockers on two lanes. On a 3 lane with HGV's in two lanes, the speed in lane three is reduced to that of the slowest car, and the slowest car is often the slowest to pull in after overtaking. This is often well below the limit.

An interesting thread Adrian but it will be a last resort for me and anyone else that has the remotest interest in driving.

Someone mentioned about pc crashing well I just hope they don't fly often because without them onboard nobody would take off.

Since I will never drive an HGV, I suppose I'll never find out.

But I doubt that mass produced car ECU's will be anywhere near the quality of aviation brains. And traffic density on the roads means that collisions will be inevitable unless everything slows down to learner driver pace.

And what about narrow lanes in Devon?? Who gives way?

I was going to suggest the hedges, but as they often have stone walls in them, maybe not!

Last July there was an accident in the US where the driver was killed. Seems the car was on "autopilot". According to Tesla you can't take your hands off the wheel and you always have to stay alert to take over.

And a month or so later, in August of this year a guy was driving his Tesla Model X and suffered a pulmonary embolism. The car was able to drive him down the freeway to the nearest hospital, saving his life.

The circumstances surrounding the exact conditions of the Florida crash aren't clear, but it remains the only death in over 130 million miles driven by Tesla owners.
