I predict that it will have NO measurable impact.

Perhaps if the punishment was the same as Drink Driving we might see some attitude change.

But I wouldn't put money on it.

£200 and 6 points from February and no more courses. HGV drivers are being reported to the Traffic Commissioners and risk losing their licence.

Thanks for the correction. A good point about the HGV drivers as you see any number of them yapping away into a phone.

The magistrate should also be empowered to smash the offender's mobile phone with a hammer.

Yes that would hurt they are fairly expensive the all singing and dancing types around today.

I think it might help the message across rather more firmly than the fine.

As I keep saying to swmbojnr Just because someone sends you a message it doesn't mean you have to respond. It doesn't have any effect she always has to respond immediately, even if it is someone that gets on her nerves.

I agree never drink & drive.

Effectively it is the same here since the reason only need to be an officers opinion of your driving. But its all well and good posters taking an authoritarian attitude to all road offences but plod operate by consent of the law abiding majority and what might be seen as harassment doesnt generate good will. I guess thats one reason why you arent done for doing 31 in a 30 limit or 71 in a 70.

I believe our police get that balance right in the main . Maybe its different in Holland where the culture is far more Germanic and authoritarian.

Having spent the last six years in the the smartphone management software business I have seen a personal addiction level on these that almost exceeds anything in my experience.

As you say the desire/requirement/need to respond instantly is becoming native. It would be good to add this to the driver re-education courses as a matter of routine.

I suggested to a couple of the big phone vendors that they should use the software in the device to help protect us (from ourselves). The device has GPS and movement sensors as almost all apps show us. It has access to maps so can determine the difference between a road and rail for example.

Why not make the phone determine what the speed and direction is, work out if it is road bound then apply a series of rules with respect to what it displays and permits you to have access to. An override would be a lock code which would be simple for the police to show had been used as evidence.

Apple Carplay is a good attempt at limiting this interaction but in my experience many people just disable it and continue to use the full interface.

Change is as difficult to cope with as always/.
