A582 according to John Worrall's "Original Morgan" is a Series II made between Oct 1955 and Nov 1960. Probably registered in the US in 1961. It should have a 3 speed gear box. It was not until Oct 1960 that Morgan made the Series III with 105E and 4 speed gear box.
"Original Morgan" is not all that accurate. I forget the chassis number of My 4/4 but according to Original Morgan it was a Series V. It was not. It was a Series IV during the transition of Series IV to Series V. The Rep at MMC told Me it was the "floor sweepings". It was also a Fergus Import.

Yes, it is a 3 speed gearbox. If you look closely at the photo below you can see the peculiar gear pattern. The letters between the original purchaser and Fergus begin in February of 1961. Fergus seemed anxious to put the deal together, and gave the buyer a $200 discount on the purchase, almost 10%. Another letter from Fergus to the buyer in March of 1961 says that the Morgan was at their office in New York and ready to pick up. I think this little Morgan was a bit of a leftover from 1960... I can scan and post the letters, invoices, and several sales brochures sent by Fergus at the time if they would be interesting to the forum. I'm new here so a bit unsure of the protocol. Yes, a car that's that close to original, deserves to be kept that way!
I suspect that a tool kit wasn't supplied with the car to begin with.
A new top can be easily made with the right, faux leather grain, material.

Your brother in law's Morgan looks very original and in superb condition, amazing to find an 'flat head' 4/4 with the original motor and such nice dash/gauges.
Very rare to see a white faced tach in a series 2 car, most were very spartan.
I live near you in Madison, Va, and have a 4/4 Series V.

Thank you all for the welcome and the kind comments. I'd like to solicit your thoughts on the top and side curtains. I have taken some photos and would you think these are original? The top has a texture I have not encountered on a British car before, but the cream trim on this top is a familiar texture. The top is now just draped over the top bows as we cannot get it to reach the last half inch to snap along the windscreen. We gave up before something split or snapped! I can only hope a day in warm sunshine will let the top stretch just enough... I have included photos of one of the side curtains as well. What I am getting at is I don't want to tell someone these are original, as supplied in 1961 unless I am confident of the fact. With other marques I have more experience, with Morgans, not so much.
