During my first driving lesson when I got onto the stretch of dual carriageway I was soon reminded by my instructor (an ex traffic cop) that whilst confident driving was one thing the speed limit actually was 70mph and the speed limit sign no longer meant unrestricted and hadn't for quite a while!

Me too in 1967, six weeks after my 17th birthday and no formal lessons, just taught by my dear old Dad. You are right about the hill starts, I remember going up Church St and onto Belle Vue Terrace - great fun in a Vauxhall Victor with column change and umbrella handbrake. Also remember driving along Pickersleigh Avenue past MMC - must have been a sign of things to come.

A good move in my view. I have always believed a lesson from an instructor should be mandatory. Not easy in some areas due to distance but that should not prevent it.
When my children passed their tests I got them lessons with instructors.
Having commuted for years on the M4, which is not that busy compared to some, and seen the antics going on I thought lessons a must.
I even think that every few years every driver should have a refresher session with an instructor, not a retest, just refresher. Having done a speed awareness course even that jogs the brain unless, like some, you go there blinkered.

Agreed...did the same with my two.
It paid dividends they both enjoyed the lessons on the motorway.
And we were less concerned with their motorway journies

It should be a mandatory in my view.

Proper Instruction on motorway driving is a very good idea. I can recall slightly older friends of mine who'd just passed their test giving driving lessons.....

The first thing I did after passing my test at 17 in 1984 was to drive flat out at a heady 85mph on the M57 during my first motorway driving experience.

The A46 Warwick bypass has always been handy for this, it has a long stretch of 3 lanes on each carriageway so a learner can get experience of driving in motorway conditions on an A road.

Don't know what my clan will have to do, the nearest motorway is 120 miles away.
Oddly enough, whenever I have the misfortune of having to use a motorway, I'm not the one wavering around in my lane, hogging an overtaking lane, blocking a car on my left from pulling out to overtake, etc. etc.

All those morons I can compensate for, but the most annoying of all is almost the opposite of a lane hogger, it's the guy who pulls back in too soon when overtaking when there's no need, covering me with whatever grit and rubbish his tyres can ping up.
