Hi,
The spot lamps/driving lamps on my ARP4 operate on an independent switch and stay on when the main beams are dipped. This makes them unusable in my view except on very quiet roads late at night when you are not constantly changing light settings.
I am considering wiring them to the main light dip/full beam switch as suggested, or seeing if I can change the alignment such that they provide some useful light without dazzling other road users. A doubt the latter will be feasible but at the moment mine are aligned skywards and slightly bosseyed and serve mainly to burn the retinas of approaching drivers!
Regarding the ignition switch I have the same concern. In practice it's not been an issue, but sooner or later someone will accidentally switch their ignition off while driving I am sure.
I have considered fitting a 'helicopter switch' to the ignition to make it more obvious - same as those fitted to many Caterhams. These are in fact designed to allow the ignition to be switched off very quickly e.g. by marshals following a race car crash. As a more appropriate alternative, I will most likely fit a locking toggle switch when I find a suitable one - the type that requires you to pull the switch outwards and past a detent to change setting. I will post a picture if I can find one

you were lucky they had any lights on. Near Amersham a great many didn't. There were a few like that yesterday up on the Cotswolds. Why is usually the dark coloured cars that are the worst offenders?

I think you can replace all the toggle switches with self illuminated versions, company's like car builder solutions can supply them

In the days when an extract from the Construction & Use Regulations was printed in the back of the Highway Code it said that lamps mounted less than 2 feet from the ground could only be used in fog or falling snow. I believe this was later changed to significantly reduced visibility. I know someone who was prosecuted some 10 years ago for using fog lamps in normal conditions. The current regulation states that front or rear fog lights must not be used unless visibility is seriously reduced (generally when you cannot see more than 100 metres). However the recent proliferation of cars driven around with fog lamps on would suggest that plod is turning a blind (dazzled?) eye. This is still true except it is probably not that "Plod" are ignoring it, it's that there are not enough of them to deal with the problem like many other offences thanks to Teresa May

John, We counted thirty vehicles, the other night, in the space of 40 kilometers, with either only one functioning headlamp, or sidelights only and sometimes only one and two with lights so dim as to be almost invisible and that was just the ones approaching us.
Anyone remember the Rover 2000 and 3500 with shaped switches so that they were instantly recognizable?

Out of curiosity, is there a dimmer for the dash illumination on an ARP4?
If so it might be simply turning it as it may be on dark setting?
