Has anyone driven the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania? If so, advice, recommendations, etc. would be appreciated.

Contact Dracula Mog - the Romania branch of MSCC.

I think they did an article in Miscellany not long ago.
Irina Dominteanu is the chair of the club. They come across as being friendly & fun people - just keep a scarf on & don`t invite them into your room. Stock up on garlic before you go.

I have not driven the Transfagarasan Highway, but have spent quite a lot of time in Romania over the last 20 years or so.

If you are going to drive over, allow at least 20 hours of driving to get to the Romanian border. It's an easy drive, just a long way.

Romania is a fantastic Country, very friendly and welcoming with a lot of great roads to drive, especially in the northern part of the Country.

If you go, I am sure you will have a great time.

I helped a chap run base camp back home so his teams families could watch their progress a few years back they did the Mongol rally in a 1.3 Hyundai Accent.

They got all the way to Ulaanbaatar without even a puncture iirc!

Trying to explain to a none geek how to update when in the back of beyond was helped by SMSing to Twitter where the teams position could be tracked was difficult at times wink

not sure their route would be do-able currently!

I took my Morgan to Romania in 1995, doing a loop from Satu Mare, Zalau, Cluj, and back out through Oradea. The roads were difficult and challenging: there were young horses, geese, dogs, anything could stray into your path. The people were incredible, we were invited to stay in locals' home on two occasions, in fact I can only remember sleeping in a hotel once. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

My Romamian experience is also dated back from the early 80's to the mid 90's so I can not comment on today's conditions.
Back then conditions were "the wild east". I hope it has changed much to the better but I would still park the car in secure and locked places only. Most people were always very friendly and helpful but there is a certain number of orhers who have problems to make a difference between yours and theirs.
Fagaras area is worth a visit but back in the 90's I preferred 4x4 cars instead of a 4/4.

Hi Ken

I did it in 2015, unfortunately only in an Audi A4 hire car. We did it the last day before it was closed for the winter. A little bit slippery to say the least at the top but a great road and at that time of the year totally empty. Going back down the other side is nice and twisty too. Good tunnel as well. Its only fully open between the end of June and normally 1st November. Check here http://transfagarasan.net/

Another really good bit of road is the Strada Valea Rasnoavei (E73A) between Azuga and Brasov.

Loads of places to stay and eat. Cluj Napaco has just had alot of work done to the main centre and last summer was looking good.

Most of the main roads are in same condition as ours I thought and considering the extremes in temperature they are pretty good. A few nasty potholes here and there. Back roads are exactly what you'd expect.

Hopefully this year I'll be getting back there in the Plus 8. As others have said very friendly people and best advice is if you break down at night stay in the car. If the bears dont get you the wolves will if they dont get you the gypsies will smile
