They were bottom of our options list and we decided to do without. (Four wheeler).

I have them. I've never used them except by accident and wondered why my bum was burning. It never gets cold enough where I live and I find the engine keeps the whole cockpit area warm anyway. A heated steering wheel would be a better option.
There is some smug satisfaction in explaining to people that the 2 buttons are for heated seats but you can easily live without them

I use my heated seats often up here. If it gets too hot, I move the switch to the off position. I also have an electric vest and electric gloves for motorcycle use. The worst cold I have ever experienced was before dawn on a July morning in Wisconsin on the motorcycle, before I left home I thought "This is July, I shouldn't need the vest or gloves" Never again. And I have seen a lot of -20F, and colder. Even in 45F ambient, the wind chill at 70mph is hellaceous.

I ordered them. Inexpensive option. Nice convenience for cold rides. My wife covers up with her Morgan blanket and appreciates the heated seats.

I have them and have used them every time I have taken my new M3W out for a ride....it should be noted that I took delivery of my car on December 23rd, and I live in Connecticut! All cold weather rides thus far!
The heated seats do get rather warm....almost on the verge of being "hot". I have to switch them off after a while, and toggle them on and off on longer rides in cold weather.
For the relatively low cost of the option, I recommend them.

I agree, they do get abit too warm after awhile, then turn them off. Two or three settings a good idea. Perhaps the designer figured heat up fast then turn off and your own body heat will keep the seat warm.

Could a variable resistor not be added to control the temperature?

Could a variable resistor not be added to control the temperature? It could, but that would heat up instead. What you really want is a timer option (turns off after 5mins, or turns on and off at certain intervals to regulate heat output). Or maybe even a thermostat?

Could a variable resistor not be added to control the temperature? I was thinking the same thing. On my volvo it had three levels. I'd be curious about replacing the little toggles with some rheostats.
