I don't think there's much more room in the coupe either. Stunning looking car though smile

Yes, that's been my experience too. I've never had an electronic ignition unit or an ECU fail or indeed give any sort of trouble in any of my cars or motorcycles.

I have, on the other hand, had far too many problems with old-fashioned coils, points, voltage regulators and all that kind of stuff to make me ever think it would be nice to go back to them.

It's all very well to use the "can't fix it by the side of the road" argument, but if they don't actually ever break down, then where's the problem?

If... Biggest word in the dictionary. smile

Work colleague (well, his swmbo ) - Nissan Micra, 7 years old, ECU failed cost more than car worth - scrapped.
LR pal - Renault Kangoo, 8 years old, dash lit up like Xmas tree, no engine run - again ECU fail cost more than van worth - scrapped.

Yes, I've had failures of old electricals, but even a distributor cost less than an ECU...

Now it looks like the Merc will be another - Google C180k cam chain. Mine's noisy - Mitsubishi engine. Oh joy!! OK not the electronics this time grin2

Fair point, but that's what AA membership and mobile phones are for smile

I realise it must be immensely frustrating and depressing to spend a squillion quid on some fancy all-singing all-dancing bit of motoring exotica, only to have it sidelined by a failed electronic whatsit, but there's a dead easy solution smile

Hehe,
If the car cost a squillion, I'll bet a failed ECU is a darn sight less moolah than the vehicle value.
It's the "cheap" end of the market where it makes little sense... smile

Well, you know what they say, "Never own a car that you can't afford to leave in a ditch and walk away from"

I'm very much taken with this...Honda.
IF I had £140k to spend on a car it could be a contender....
But I don't!

Save your money! A McLaren 570s is £500 cheaper and British to boot. smile

Cheap cars are consumer durables, like a fridge or a dishwasher.
They have a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years and are not really repairable.

Remember Jays' little Fiat? that was, I seem to recall, mostly due to chafing wires in the loom...they thought!

As to the Mercedes 180 Cam Chain issue....yes: a question.
My 180 is of the age/miles where cam chain wear is a potential issue. I'm going to ask a local MB specialist for a quote to change the chain. The car is worth about £4k and is on a Mercedes personal finance contract that ends in October, with £2k left to buy the car.
If the cam chain replacement is more than that then I'll consider just handing it back. But I like the little thing...so let's see.
