Whilst I have not re-read the previous 22 pages, and have never owned a Boxster, I am not sure a Boxster would feel 'special' enoough for ones toy car. I took a Cayman out for an afternoons test drive a couple of years ago, and by the time I'd taken I took it back it already felt quite ordinary, something the Morgan doesn't do, although it might if I drove it everyday, I suppose.

Prophetic words Neil, when we turned up in the Boxster GTS (the Plus 8 was being serviced) at our lunch meet at the Wellington Arms, it was only the Mog's that were allowed to park out front!

Having said that the Boxster is a very enjoyable daily driver and after just over 10000 miles in the first year, it's definitely a keeper - even if it is competent though slightly anodyne.

Hope you continue to enjoy your car Bob and certainly in our ownership the Boxster has performed without fault and it even goes another year before the first service...

Couldnt agree more. The Boxter is an incredibly competent car, handles brilliantly, is mostly reliable (bore scoring etc in the 6 cylinder models), almost reasonably priced and in general a really sensible choice. But no way is it "special" as a Morgan is. Its the sort of sports car that my mother would have chosen for me.

Trouble is, there are few if any sports cars made these days that have real character like the Morgan. There are track day tools like the Caterfields or Radical or Ginetta but they arent for taking the wife to the pub in unless you are a/ under 30 and b/ like basic.

There are cars like the 430/458/488 that definitely are "Special", but on any rational basis the ownership costs are simply silly. So to my mind Morgan and maybe Lotus have the character sports car market to themselves

My Toyota engined Lotus was one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned but the Lotus reputation for supply of parts is as bad as described above for MMC

What is special to one individidual is mundane to another. I am quite sure and in fact know several people who would love to own a Boxter (if they could afford it) and consider Boxters special. They like the look of a Morgan but consider it an anachronism and old hat. As has been said before one mans favourite food is another's poison.

I seriously looked a a 718 Boxster before buying the +8, speed isn't everything. And the wife liked the Morgan better as-well.

Surely "mundane" = common. "special" = rare. In other words the boxter would be special if built in the same numbers as the Morgan. That would make seeing one or riding in one that much more of a event.

I'm not knocking the boxter. Its way more of a car in an engineering sense than a morgan, as indeed are the typical mass produced family saloons. Its also way more common and far less quirky.

I sold my Cayman and bought a Discovery Sport last year as I needed a more practical car. Thought I'd miss the Cayman dreadfully but strangely haven't. In fact I miss my Z4 more 🙄.
The Cayman was beautifully built, sounded glorious with the sports exhaust, handled superbly but unless I really ragged it I realised that it was emotionally uninvolving. It was just too good. Whilst owning it, I was lent a couple of new 911s....each for a couple of days. I felt the same about those. So Porsche is off my list sadly. Mind you......an early 911......😍

Perfection can seem dull...I know this seems like a contradiction, but the human mind is a strange place. I can see how Porsche, and some other brands, have ended up producing wonderfully engineered products but in doing so have eliminated the "character" that develops an emotional bond with the owner.

Morgans are flawed, in many ways, but owners either love them for what they are, or find they cannot live with the flaws.

It is interesting that the C43 has an ability to emotionally involve the owner, despite its mechanical excellence. I'm not sure why this should be, yet, but it is great fun finding out.

I always wanted this particular Caterham. I'd had many others but this was the pinnacle and the goal of Caterham ownership for me.

One came on the market 5 years ago and if I hadn't done the deal straight away the chance would have been gone, probably forever, they just never come up for sale.

Anyway, as the old saying goes "you should never meet your hero's", a stunning thing and a real talking point to those in the Caterham fold but a pig on the road.

I swapped it for my 80th and I've already done more miles in the MOG than I'd done in the last 3 years in the 7.

Love the thing as I do my Lotus. I'll keep them both now and not look for anything else in the near future, hoping residuals may be kind to me
