So, my advice is be tough with yourself. Don't keep stuff without good reason. Ask yourself two questions: "will I ever need it" and "can I easily buy it".
If you are uncertain about needing it and can easily replace it, then dump it. All very well, but what if by the time you need it, you can't afford to buy a replacement? Most things don't cost anything to keep, but constantly get more expensive to buy.

Bits of wood that I tend to hang onto are seen as clutter by someone! Within days of throwing it out, guess what I could do with? Yup a bit of wood!
The loft needs a major sort out we have boxes up there for things that went to the tip yonks ago.
I am currently re-jigging my computer room, oh dear I have about thirty years of software and 'bits that may come in handy' I haven't touched in ages.
This spring I have promised myself to have a big declutter!

I grew up in a time when "things" were expensive and or difficult to source. So the natural tendency was to hoard, just in case.
I also have a tendency to keep things associated with good experiences and memories.
The result is I have far, far too much stuff. I am now trying to declutter the parts of the house that contain my junk. This is harder than it seems.
The next BIG task is to get rid of a lot of wood in the garage, some inherited when Dad died in 2000. I will need a skip....

I'm using some of my wood to build my coffin. When you see the cost of coffins..... Sort of yes, you can take it with you....!

Will your coffin be double glazed Peter?
Just thinking where a lot of your wood came from!

I think it was William Morris who said "own nothing you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."

Is there a prize for most morbid hobby of the year ? If so, you've got to be in with a shout for the 2017 award Peter.

Being raised on a farm, installed a sense of "save it for later" in me, as it was not practical to just pop down the shop to buy a new one. This has sort of followed me through to later life, where I have a dread of throwing out practical things in case I or a friend need it and cant buy one. I guess this also comes from the mentality of seeing if we can repair something before we replace it. With the price of things so low in this day and age, and with so much choice it is far easier and probably cheaper to replace if you have to get someone else to fix it. I had a reasonably new chain saw damaged after I lent it to someone (They used neat fuel instead of 2 stroke mix ) and the quote to repair it by Stihl was $350, the new one was $375. I went online purchased the parts and fixed it in 4 hours (never having pulled a chainsaw down before) and cost me $50. If I did it again it would probably take an hour. I have boxes of bolts, screws etc. and never throw out any metal. I also have a phobia about destroying history, so I tend to keep really old things from the past. When I go I guess most of that will go to the refuse as no one wants it or has the space to keep it any more. Anyone on here need a 50 year old slide rule?

I'm pretty much like Graeme. Been in the same house 35 years so that doesn't help, never had much as a child so made up for since. All I wanted was a Scalextric and a electric guitar! Was about 28 when I got the guitar and 39 when I got a Scalextric. Anyway got more than 2 of most things now, Morgans, about 12 guitars, 300+ shirts, about 40 pairs of shoes, 100's of books, models etc. The men in white coats will be here soon.........
