I plumped to stay put - near the children & grandchild. Also increasingly being near to an NHS hospital and other services is worth its weight in gold - we may complain but the service was there when we needed it a couple of years ago. Chemo & radio therapy a couple of times a week over six months or so from the hospital just down the road and a couple of inpatient weeks where easy to visit - priceless as they say. By the way - now 3 years and all clear.
Plus loads of friends and plenty of Morgan events.

Having worked in the travel business all my career, I have been lucky enough to get paid to see the world, I love it, I love travelling and I love the journey....but the best journey of all is the one that takes me home...to the UK. I'm staying put and favour a move to Dorset, Devon or Cornwall.

Not sure I can offer any advice other than to go with your joint instinct. Wherever you choose to shortlist, it would be worth the expense of renting a holiday cottage for a month out of season to see how you really get on when the area is quiet and the tourists have gone home.

Graham yes that's the one. We've yet to meet but we regularly report to each other on our pet planes.

Paul, yes that's a good suggestion for some out-of-season stays in the places under consideration as part of the decision making process. Along with consideration for family and friends and quite a few other factors. We will get there.

I would go for France, much cheaper property, less crowded roads and better weather if you go south. I have a holiday home in the west country, it's beautiful and green there because it's always flipping raining.

A predicament. 7 years ago we had the same problem. Retiring from Norway with its 3 short months of summer and cold winters. We chose France, Girond area and have not regretted it. Winters can get cold @-8 when winds come off Central Europe, but summer, spring and autumn are pleasant and not the 40s you can get in Spain and Cyprus. French Med coast can get expensive and overwhelmed by tourists in the Summer. Dordogneshire is as it sounds but Lot and Garonne and Girond are a good mixture of French and expat. Do not know about Ger but it is pretty.
Other things you should consider are health care and Tax and how Brexit could effect them. Presently if you or your wife receive a UK pension and get an S1 you will get the same healthcare as a Frenchman (state pays 2/3rds you pay 1/3 for which third you can take insurance). Generally I find the French system better than NHS, you choose your doctor, specialist and hospital. Tax is based on household income and can be cheaper than UK. However there is a wealth tax if your worldwide assets exceed €1.3 m. Bureaucracy can be a problem, they love paperwork, but registering Morgan was relatively simple. Lastly housing good value, a 3/4 bed house, barn and land can be got for €350-400,000. Look up site called leboncoin.fr and check prices for the areas you are considering. Hope that helps.
