When I got too old to lug my ac30 about at two in the morning I changed to an Ac15. What a great amp. Several soundmen ( including the boys who had just come back from liveaid)told me at gigs when they miked it up that it was the best sound ever. It didn't matter where you set the controls, it sounded terrific.
Still got it tucked away unused for probably 10 years now........
Nick Interesting perhaps I should consider the AC15, one of the things putting me off the AC30 was the weight.

I went out to buy a AC30 reissue a few years ago, it was so loud I ended up buying an AC15. That also would blow the roof off my house so barely used it. Great amp...

of course, not all AC15s are equal......I believe there are many variants these days. Mine just looks like half an ac30 (which is what it is of course)

That's a good question. I'm fighting off saying the old ones!
The valvetronix type ones, anything with modelling, may be good amps but they don't give that "my fingertips are physically linked to the sound coming out of the amp" sensation. If you don't use pedals much the straightforward valve one with treble boost is amazing. I believe (I've been told by good people) the latest ones are good but I haven't tried them. So I suppose the real answer is you'll know it if you try one because you can feel it. It's so personal isn't it...And also,what works at home doesn't always work for a gig so that needs taking into account too.
Just to negate all I've said so far...... I've fitted with a simple Award Session transistor amp perfectly successfully, I don't think the audience can tell the difference, and that's slot lighter and more reliable. But a really fruity amp ups my performance I believe....But it's only a belief. One meets those guitarists who can make any amp sound amazing... Don't you just hate them?

Nick Yup! As a home-only player I find my mood seems to affect the sound of the amps rather markedly. I have a Marshall DSL401 and a Mesa Boogie 5-25 Express. I can set them up so they are sounding great, have a really enjoyable session, then go back the next day and they sound pants. Go figure, as they say. But for living room noodling (which to be honest covers 99% of my playing) I have a dinky little Yamaha THR10C, which has a surprisingly good sound to it.
