Wow...first world viewpoint or what. no wonder half the world hates us. Good job Bill Gates hasn't seen that list. Luckily he's too busy trying to rid the world of Malaria or something. The best people I know think of others' before themselves (and I don't mean spoiling their kids. Nick What exactly on that list is incompatible with also using ones residual wealth to try to do some good in the wider world? I would add a point 22) "Try not to become a sanctimonious prick"

The best people I know think of others' before themselves (and I don't mean spoiling their kids. Nick Does half the world hate us? If they do I don't know why, as a country we give millions in aid all over the world. On a personal level I donate regular to numerous charities, my wife used to be a Pastor and has done missionary work in Africa. I don't see that as being in conflict with wanting to enjoy what we've earned. Whilst I admire Bill Gates he hasn't exactly given away all of his wealth and live a simple monastic life, what he gives away is what he couldn't possibly spend. I read a while ago that he was only going to give his kids a few million because he wanted them to have to work for their money so that they'd appreciate it! Most of us on here own Morgans (and/or other cars) that could be described as extravagant, but that doesn't mean that we are all selfish, does it?

But hey, I'm sanctimonious so I forgive you Nick

But hey, I'm sanctimonious so I forgive you Nick It was a general exhortation on a tendency that can be more pronounced as people get older. You can decide whether it has any relevance to you. You have since clarified that your comments were not an attack on people who were open enough to share some fascinating personal insights on this thread. So you may not be a prick.

Wow! Mucho thread drift..!
Thoughts as we get older now means we fight a lot because someone else has a different viewpoint, I guess.
In my eyes helping someone else does't always mean financial aid, it means camaraderie & friendship, time and mutual respect.
TM's getting a bit too testosterone fuelled of late I fear..

Thanks for clarifying Nick. I didn't take it personally, just expressing my viewpoint, as were you. I don't think it's just us old gits on TM that get a bit hot under the collar at times, I've noticed lots of stuff on Facebook has become very aggressive and personal recently, mostly around Trump and Brexit. I tend to keep my views to myself, wouldn't have posted anything I thought someone would take offence at. Life's too short.

Quite right Steve and I hate to say this, but getting shorter by the day. Great thread by the way, a lot of things said, just as I was about to put fingers to keyboard. Especially about helping ones children out, on the one hand things are always tough when starting out in life, especially with a young family, but then again most of us all managed it somehow, so a bit of financial help is always welcome, on the other, if money comes too easily it isn't appreciated because it wasn't 'earned', so gets blown on wine, women and cars, until it's all gone.
