Our local tourist office has just put together this little film about the Stroud district. Amazing how when you live somewhere you don't tend to notice how nice the place is. http://www.visitthecotswolds.org.uk/film

Our small walking group have a number of walks around the Stroud area. Bloody exhausting but well well worth it.

Yorkshire's moors just a few miles South . Then Cumbria not to far west with the Lakes etc . But the best is just a few miles North , Northumberland no better county in Britain the coast hills and its secrets are there to find We can rise have b/fast do Hadrians wall turn North up into Scotland . Castles all over head over to the east and down the coast popping into any harbour pub and the roads are quiet . You can keep your tropical island pink sand and turquoise warm sea lapping at your feet and the wine . Much rather be walking the Northumberland hills and sitting on a rock with a flask of coffee eating a sandwich . and the natives are nice if you can understand them Perm = poem Turd= toad Wor= our Wor lass= wife doddle= fag ash div'nt de = don't do bairns = children gowl=goal try to pronounce them with the Northumbrian accent .

It is said the weather here is much like the UK. But in 1 hour east I can be in a very dry climate area. 1 1/2 hour west I can be walking on a coast beach. Or I hour southwest I can be in the snow skiing. Then there is the beautiful Columbia River Gorge 1/2 hour away.

Where we live in the Norfolk Broads is brilliant for driving as there are no roads of any consequence hence nobody drives through Norfolk to get anywhere else. Obviously the sailing is a big draw in the summer months and we also have a long but cold coast with nice little villages plus a number of good stately homes to visit. The down side is of course the summer visitors who, despite bringing much needed money into the area, often bring big city/town driving manners with them. To top it all, E Anglia is possibly the driest part of the UK where we can stand looking up at the big skies watching the empties going back to Manchester.

I'm in Lexington, in the north western suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. As the place where the first shots of the revolution were fired in 1775 we get lots of tourists, but they mostly come in coaches and don't hang around. Driving in Boston is infamous, with rude cutthroat drivers ignoring the rules, potholes, and very few directional signs. Beyond the inner suburbs however it is great. There are potholes of course, but also miles of rolling countryside often with little or no traffic. The Fall foliage can be stunning and while there are no pubs, there are many places to stop for coffee or ice cream. From Lexington we can get to skiing hills or great beaches within a 45 minute drive. No Morgan driving in winter because of the cold and the crap on the roads, but April is getting closer.

Devon for me. A large and varied county from the rugged north coast; south through the moors and mid Devon countryside, then on to the beaches of the south coast. There are some glorious driving roads that very few visitors will ever find. Some great pubs as well.

JCK,
I often think that our American friends are so lucky in that within their huge country they can go surfing, skiing, drive on huge roads, small desert roads, go mountaineering, sail in warm water and do as my friends do go south in the winter and north in the summer all with one language, one currency and one set of laws.

I miss the UK tons, but I like the space over here and that you can escape traffic and crowds. The weather helps. Winter is long and cold but it's often bright and sunny and it's a dry cold you can dress for. Summer is guaranteed but can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Fall is fabulous and I love to ride my bikes and drive around enjoying the colour. Blink and you can miss Spring.
