One of my ex-Siemens colleagues went to R-R before he retired. He had heard that they were planning an all the bad news at once announcement. The real issue is whether the current CEO can drive through the improvements and disrupt the "always done it this way" malaise that is slowing them down.
R-R are a very important local employer (Derby is only 15 miles from here) and there are a lot of jobs depending on them getting the next phase of their development right.
On the plus side, they still invest heavily in apprenticeships and staff training.

The bribery thing is particularly worrying. Hopefully all the dirt is now out. Whats worrying is the unrealistic inflexible attitude of HMG. What we call bribery is the normal way of business in many countries and if we are legalistic and po faced about it then we will lose out. As indeed we recently have to the French. I dont give Rolls much hope for the future. |Its a dog eat dog world out there and not a time to be playing buy the rules when almost no - one else is doing so.

not a time to be playing buy the rules when almost no - one else is doing so. Not true - in my Corporate life I worked for subsidiaries of some major firms (UK, German, French and American). In all cases, we had to comply. Brown Envelopes were an instant dismissal offence.

In all cases, we had to comply. Brown Envelopes were an instant dismissal offence. Same experience - worked for a US-headquartered investment manager distributing across Europe. We were very successful in Northern and Central Europe, but access to Italy, Greece etc was hampered by our refusal to pay the 'marketing allowances' (corporate bribes) demanded by the local bank-owned distribution networks. Luckily, as a privately owned company we had no external shareholders telling us that we should compete in these markets using the same tactics as our major competitors.

And to be fair it was common in both France and Italy. I can only assume that either you never did business in the middle east or were not close enough to know what was going on.

Don't get involved in corruption in China unless you want a bullet in the bck of the head. I haven't heard of any foreigners being executed but you could go through a very nasty time while you are waiting for the verdict. China executes corrupt Hangzhou and Suzhou officials - BBC News
