My mum was taken into Lancaster hospital Sunday and so I visited last night armed with a lovely bunch of flowers only to be told by the staff nurses that because of 'health and safety' they can no longer allow flowers into the wards. I took flowers into Jess when she was in hospital for an amputation and was told the same thing. I took a picture of the flowers and put the print into a nice frame. I took that into Jess and was then told that the glass in the frame was an H&S issue as well. So I took the frame off and asked if it would be possible for Jess to poison herself with the ink from the print.

It's a bit bonkers isn't it I do understand that in exceptional circumstances that flowers may harbour harmful bacteria or give off pollen that might be allergens but I wish common sense would balance those dangers by the positive effect that having fresh flowers around may have I see lots of visitors wandering into wards not using the hand gel as nobody enforces it and we all just wander in wearing shoes from just being outside I did some work many years ago for a food supplier supplying M&S and the level of hygiene required for any visitor just visiting the factory for a 5 minute tour was incredible - overshoes, hats, lab coats, supervised hand washing and yet we allow anyone to wander in to our high dependency wards at visitor times without any protection
