My son has an Audi A4 in which the gearbox has started to become noisy and he was reccomended a product called "Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabiliser" to quieten it down.

This product is made in the USA but is readily available in the UK.
It is stated as suitable for both engines and gearboxes and apart from increasing the lubrication qualities of the existing oil, it is also claimed to make gearboxes and differentials considerably quieter. On the bottle it states that it is also recommended for high performance motor cycle engines, such as Harley Davidson. It is also claimed to cling better to cylinder walls and prevent dry starting.
I immediately thought of noisy bevel boxes as a possible use for this product and although mine is tolerable, I know it is a common problem among us owners of 5 speeders.
The fact that it states that it is suitable for H.D.s, it would probably be OK in our X-Wedge engines.

What do you other guys think?

It may quiten the box for a while. It will not repair the fault. Therefore more a product to get a better trade in if the box is noisy but not a repair in a bottle.

I tried Lucas Heavy Duty in my BB

It made no perceptable difference!

I .have always hoped that there would be some liquid engineering out there which would help.

Trying to find the link but Bob is the oil guy did a study on this stuff and found that it kills the anti foaming properties in the oil. That along with the potential for starvation if the oil is too heavy, this stuff usually belongs on the snake oil shelf.

That said I've not run it in anything that takes the 20w50 so I can't comment on that, but at least down here in Texas that's the stuff you put in a vehicle with a clapped out motor hoping some sucker will buy it.

in my young days I used I did put banana skins in diffs and gearboxes, short term reduction in noise was immediate, dont think I want a banana in my bevel though, that sounds quite rude!
overall the design and set up and also where it is in relation to where we sit and thiness of body all contribute to the increased bevel noise, something overall we will all just have to live with I guess, but its a good post and maybe someone with a real noisy one should give it a go?

Not meaning to be a doom monger but unnatural noises usually require a strip down and replacement components.

All the oil additives I have ever come across has at best been useless and at worst harmful and benefits are usually very short lived, but enough to get the car through the auction!

Sawdust also works wonders in a noisy diff.

Raw egg and a slice of bread fixed a radiator enough to get me home once as well.

Once filled the sump with EP90 to get some oil pressure just for the sale, it worked.

Those were the days when you could stand a spoon up in EP90 not like the witches piss you get now.
