I hate to think what my Roadster pushes out on full throttle but it sounds fantastic on tick-over and it isn't necessary to blast it to feel some acceleration. Excessive noise is a problem and I am sure that there will be further restrictions in due course.

Italy is relatively easy on exhaust noise. A year or so back I joined our local SuperStrada where the slip road enters within the last 100 metres of a tunel. I had seen a car approaching in the outside lane and accelerated with a fair amount of noise in the tunel to 90kph (speed limit 70). I turned my head to see where the other car was and discovered a police car right beside me. Naturally I backed off but they did not even take any notice of me.

On the other hand we had a friend who copped a huge fine and nearly had his bike sequestered in Switzerland. I am always very careful when passing through towns in Switzerland.

I remember being at Silverstone for the 2009 race when the Morgans took both races. Whilst the other cars did seem louder (Audi, Porsche etc) the sheer sound pressure generated by the Morgans V8 and side exhausts made them more painful. A small girl standing with her father repeatedly pointed out that it was the most uncomfortable car as it went past.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I had this problem, sometimes you want to slip quietly through a village and sometimes you want to let it rip on the open road.
I made side-pipes with a mechanical valve in the y-piece. The valves are spring closed and cable operated from a lever on the tunnel. Best of both worlds? Works for me. (I posted a picture in the photo gallery)

I seem to remember that the Saint had something similar on his Hirondelle.......Mind you, I read that book in about 1960 so I could be wrong....

Its a long time since I came across EXUP !

I had an RD350LC which got rebuilt several times and on the last time had EXUP fitted to add a little (more) extra zing. It was great from a geek point of view. Then again it had a power rev-range of about 3000 rpm so needed a lot of gear shifting.

I had a 350LC YPVS for a while, manic little bike. I replaced it with a derestricted Yamaha FZR1000 EXUP. which was absolutely f***ing mental. Then I realised I wanted to live, so I sold it smile

I forgot to add that whilst the Hirondelle was obviously fictional, the book was written in the thirties so cars must have been available with it?

The concept of town and country exhaust systems has been around for a long time. In the '20s and '30s (a notation we won' t be able to use for much longer) many sports motorcycles were fitted with a baffle at the end of the exhaust pipe that could be lifted via a cable and a lever on the handlebars.
