Frank----I took charge of my low mileage roadster last December, and I must say I am extremely nervous of the lack of sump clearance---especially with road speed humps which can vary in construction. What kind of ball part cost did your "conversion" cost?---sorry to be so blunt---was it less than a grand with the deflector? You seem to have had a good job done though,---but thats not must consolation to a massive waste of time, I know. Regards David

Dry sump is an option, but the sump is $590, so with the pump and pipes it's going to be well over £1000. Don't get this out of perspective. Frank was unlucky for sure. Last June when I did my first oil change I enquired around the dealers after reading on Mogtalk that an increased clearance sump was available. The dealers I asked had not heard of a problem then, and had no knowledge of a different sump. Yesterday I passed over something like 50 speed bumps en route to, and back from Chatsworth House (Peak District). One road has 15 nasty bumps so that was 30 passes there & back. The thing is, the bellhousing and gearbox crossmember are also low and vulnerable. The standard sump is low on the offside for sure, but providing you keep that in mind, you should be OK. The Mulfab sump is a big improvement but you'll still only have around 4 inches at best, and the dry sump won't help the bellhousing and crossmember. I should have a bit more information on standard sumps later this week. PS: Dry Sump - The tank could be fitted on the bulkhead by the fusebox (at least on my car) or in front of the engine where there is plenty of room. But a belt driven pump would be a squeeze.

Some very interesting info on Sumps Harald. - too late for me however, seeing the costs of going the 'Dry Sump' route, John, I am happy to have gone to 'Mulfab' with the outcome in my thread above.

Spot the difference in these photos. The first is my Series1 which shows the third hole (with Nyloc nut) - the hole is not present on the Ford sump. The second is Frank's Series2 with the Ford gearbox, and you can see there is no third hole and the first hole is used.

Frank, Looks a very nice job, I like all that armour plate and since your incident I have been uncomfortable. A friend of mine has had a make shift guard made for the original sump, it has quite few scars. This fit puts it even closer to the road, so it is hard to know if the sump would have been in danger for some of the impacts.

I have my roadster since 2008 and I touched only 2 times, without any damage. And the roads on my island are, well, I would say "tropical". I just try not to drive my roadster like my Defender

I must say I am extremely nervous of the lack of sump clearance---especially with road speed humps which can vary in construction. Sorry David, I missed your comment when I last looked here. One I noticed how low the sump was I changed my technique from straddling Speed Humps to driving over them with offside wheel (lowest side) where possible. That is what I would have done with the Gate Stop had I realised it Cobbles had sunk. In future I will do that regardless. What kind of ball part cost did your "conversion" cost? .You would need to Ask Peter Mulberry for the Actual cost + Vat + Postage for you model as he does a replacement service on some but in my case it was my own sump that he altered because he had not converted my type/model before. The Dealer Charged me £150 + Fitting. (Mr. Peter. Mulberry. Mobile: 07802 937907 Work 02476397666 Fax 02476545008 E-mail PMulberry@mulfab.co.uk) The Sump Guard was from the Factory (The part number on my invoice is MCF007282) Engine Closing Plate @ £117.75 + Vat + Fitting. This needed to be 'cut down' and drilled to fit and in both cases it is the labour cost that is the 'killer' so if you can fit them yourself then it makes it the more attractive option. My work Cost was mixed with other repairs. I hope that helps but as H says don't worry, just be more aware than I was and I am sure that you will be ok.
