Reminds me of the time I taxied out behind a 747 in our Cessna Citation at Zurich, it looked like a block of flats in front. Waited 4 minutes for the wake turbulence to clear before taking off.

Also reminded of that great phrase (if the A319 had wing mirrors) "objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear"

We will be flying over from Australia in a couple of weeks time, and always fly the Qantas A380. Its a great plane to sit in, but obviously not to fly close too ....
There are 2 engine versions Pratt and Witney or Rolls Royce. Because of the runway length at Melbourne only the more powerful Rolls Royce fly out. Even so its a bit disconcerting, I'm never sure if we are taxying or taking off, which always seems to happen in the last 50 metres of runway. After 21 hours travel time I'm glad to get off......

The A380 is a great plane for a journey that long. It does seem quieter and more relaxed. My regular flights to SFO flipped to LAX for a bit as they had the first BA A380 on that route and the old 777 on SFO was worn out. Now they have an A380 on SFO as well if you choose the right flight.

I notice BA also now have a new Dreamliner 787 running daily LHR to San Jose (SJC) flights if you go t the west coast. Its a good little airport, fast through and less queue-centric in most places !

BA have also opened a Gatwick to Oakland (North bay) route as well as the 2-a-day to SFO. Its a wonder they don't sit nose to tail all the way over. They have some attractive pricing on the OAK flights and hopefully the Trav+ seats might even be available.

Reminds me of a story told many years ago by an ex RAAF pilot.

They took a helicopter to Papua New Guinea in a C130. The local tribe had never seen an aircraft before but were OK with the helo being unloaded from the Hercules (mother giving birth).

They got quite upset when it was time to load the helo back though........
