I agree that any IRA activist should roast in hell as long as the official UK forces never killed or suppressed any people in the Northern Ireland conflict, not even in a collateral damage. In any other case we might need a lot of tea and biscuits to discuss the whole issue and try to understand the motivation of both sides.

Shooting at soldiers? I could get my head around that maybe as a 'freedom fighter' - but blowing up innocent women and children, the beatings, torture? Not so sure about that.

Sadly there are many angles to this one --yes, Hanes, the British army did shoot civilians, 14 in one incident ent Known as Bloody Sunday and some other killings took place in which the then police, the RUC were involved in cahoots with the unionist thugs, the UDA, opposite to the IRA thugs. Does that justify IRA killings - definitely not, but don't think for one moment that it was all one-sided.
As a matter of fact, a senior officer of the police in NI who is a friend of mine has told me that if a building site was situated in an area which wasn't definitively unionist or nationalist, then the UDA and IRA had a meeting to decide who should collect the protection money!! Most of the conflict descended into racketeering and at that stage some of the leaders on both sides decided to quit the extreme violence and the "peace process" began. While the is now a fragile peace, the two communities are still pretty divided in working class areas.
I have very mixed views on McGuinness but at least he was prepared to admit his involvement in the IRA unlike the other real leader of that set of thugs, Gerry Adams!
Rant over!

Will Ireland ever be one nation I wonder? Is there a case for an independence vote there more than Scotland?

There is a clause in the Good Friday agreement that states Northern Ireland can join the South if the people so wish. A typical Tony Blair fudge and one day we will have the Royalists fighting to remain in the Union. I agreed with Enoch Powel who stated that it must be made clear that Ireland would never be united no matter what the IRA did, thus negating the IRA's reasondetre. In my opinion there is too much forgiveness of evil in this world and the SAS should have been allowed to wipe out the IRA together with McGuiness. Which makes you, were you in charge of it, every bit as bad as McGuiness. If the inhabitants of Norniron want to become Micks, let them. We arent a third world dump bothered about territory any longer. Leave that sort of thing to the Chinese or even the Spanish.

Will Ireland ever be one nation I wonder? Is there a case for an independence vote there more than Scotland? My friends in Ireland all agree that the Republic has no use for the north and couldn't afford to support it the way the UK does. Any Politician suggesting Union would not get far!

Arbitrary land borders are the problem. It's a human trait to defend territory, but innocents always get sucked in and suffer. I don't know enough about the history but separation in Ireland makes no sense to me.
