I don't think that's too bad really. The air con ECU fried itself after three years on my Mk4 Golf. That was over £700 to replace in 2004.

My +8 motor's vacuum pump leak down to a £5.00 sealing cap but 5.5 hours labour, about £750 inc VAT, to diagnose, strip down, reassemble.

Yes but think what it would have cost on a Ferrari, Bentley etc.

When you wedge the V12 in a slinky thing it gets even worse to find access. I had a bill for the Pheaton V10 which made my eyes water and parts were <£100 as you outline. Still it was only one in 120,000 miles so I figure it was fair use.

It all depends on getting your money's worth. I guess Peter does the mileage to see to that.

I remember changing the synchromesh in the Ferrari gearbox. The parts were £150. The bill was £8,200 and that was with a lot of negotiating!

Answer: "Unfortunately we cannot send you an offer since your car is classified as high risk car.
After many years of experience with these vehicles, these models have expensive damages and, for this reason, we cannot propose any warranty"

Here is another example of an expensive, cheap repair...

The 2008 Mercedes CLC 180 needs new rear metal brake pipes.
It will fail the next MOT and having had a good look they are very pitted.
The parts are less than £50 the pair.

Fitting.....

Take a deep breath.... 9.5 hours labour!!
Plus replacement exhaust system and other bits...

Why?

First remove the exhaust, which after 10 years is sufficiently corroded that it will not survive. Discover that the cat is integral with the down pipe and so will also have to be replaced.

Next remove all the under tray, followed by the prop shaft.

Remove the rear suspension springs and shocks.
Remove the drive shafts.

Now, disconnect the rear hydraulics plus ABS connections, then unbolt and lower the rear sub frame, complete with differential, etc.

Now remove the brake pipes and replace with new .

Reverse the diss-assembly procedure.

This is the future: what would have been a simple job made insanely difficult.

I have asked two independent MB specialists and my local "all models" garage. None of them want the job. Why? Special Tools needed and often problems re-fitting the rear subframe.

The car is worth £3500 and this job will cost £1500 + VAT!!!!!
But I'll do it as whilst the dealer will give me £3500 for the CLC I'd have to buy a new car and I need a new car like a hole in the head.

And I like the CLC.

Now you understand why I traded mine for a small Ford, apart from needing something that was easier for swmbo to enter/exit smile

I had the same good news with my BMW touring 318i. But my local MOT station had worked out a reroute, think it cost me about £100...PHEW.

Ray,
I think I'll look further and see if anyone can see an obvious re-route.
Thanks for the idea.
