I replaced my rear tyres last year Alex. They were around ten years old. The rubber had hardened so much that I was getting wheelspin every time when doing any spirited starts. All gone now and so much more grip. Change them, and feel safer as well as faster round those corners.

Hi all
To be fair I don't know if tires are original but will switch to new rubber, can never hurt. Booked in this week.
In terms of progress: damper blades cleaned, greased and tightened but sadly not fix on wobble.
So next stop tires. I am convinced the play in the column is what's doing it through...

You need an assistant to wobble the steering wheel while you check the steering/hubs/suspension for play. It doesn't take much to cause discernible play. Same for the hubs/wheels where the assistant shakes the wheel while you look for play. I'd start at the steering wheel and work forward. Spline, column mounts under the dash then forward.

Hi Sosplan
Yep my daughter Lola has provided that for me. There's clear rock back and forth from steering wheel. Been along the column and can't find loose bolts.

I hate to say this but do you have a tool box above the top of the steering column? That is a big rust potential area. So the bolts can be tight but the metal rotten.

yes have the toolbox but the whole thing looks quite straight. Are you suggesting this is related to the steering column John?

I have the 5 stud alloys. I had the tyres rebalanced before Xmas which I thought helped, but then a 3 hour drive up to Vienna showed it up again and seems worse now.
Having read the blades link I feel that's next logical step to explore... When you had the alloys balanced, did they fit weights just to the inside of the rims? I suffered a bad wobble on my Roadster and tried everything. In the end the factory had the car off me for a day and ended rebalancing the wheels with weights to both sides of the rims which more or less cured the problem. The alloys aren't made to the best of tolerances which doesn't help nor does the fact the the wheel rim sits well outside the ideal line of the kingpin and so will tend to exacerbate any unbalanced wheel.

Interesting you say that Jays... I was looking around underneath today and see weights on inside only... plus I noticed what seemed to be some weights missing also... Booking in for new tires so will push to have them focus more on balance after...

I had a problem with My R&P. Too much steering movement. Turns out the R&P pinion gear was not being pushed fully on the rack because the Nylatron follower had seized in the slot. Removed Nylatron follower and filed it a bit so it would push the pinion down for a full mesh. I had help diagnosing this and it took a bit to find the problem/solution. I was forced to remove the R&P so it could be worked on the bench.

hi all... seems like now I am getting closer to the problem. Been looking around underneath and found my front wheel is carry 55g on inside outer rim, and 15g plus on inside inner and it also looks like some may be missing / fallen off. Obviously this is way beyond normal but goes some way to explaining the problem!!!!!!!
